New York hits record 12-day stretch without murder amid cold snap in city
Streak started on February 1 and ended on Friday, February 13 Temperatures were slightly below average Studies show crime ebbs during cold weather
New York City's longest stretch without a murder in 20 years this month corresponded with unseasonably chilly weather outside.
For 12 days - starting February 1 - not a single homicide was committed in America's biggest city.
It was the longest streak without deadly violence since the New York Police Department began keeping records in 1994.
The previous record, 10 days, was set last year from February 13 to February 22.
The streak ended on Friday, February 13th when Eric Roman, 28, was gunned down during an argument on 89th Street in Queens shortly before midnight.
Studies show crime tends to ebb in colder weather as people go indoors and are less willing to go out outside and interact with neighborhood enemies or targets of opportunity.
However, during last year's 10-day streak, from February 13 to February 28, temperatures were unseasonably warm - in the mid-50s.
In 2014, the city had the lowest number of murders - 328, five fewer than in 2013 - since it began keeping comprehensive crime records in 1963.
The number of homicides peaked in 1990 at 2,248 -- six a day on average -- and then began a sharp decline in 1994 with the advent of then mayor Rudy Giuliani's policy of 'zero tolerance' policing.

Global cooling saves lives.
It also buries and preserves bodies.

Say What?! Could that be a typo? Seriously, did they just start keeping crime records in 1994? 21 years ago? Not 121 years ago?
Hmm. What’s the matter, no quivering Polar bear stories? No melting-ice-cap alerts?
(Of course this doesn’t include the liberals’ deliberate exclusion of NY abortuaries)
Crimate change.
True
There could have been murders but the bodies are under the snow/ice where nobody can find them and/or people aren’t outside as much so the lower the chance of somebody stumbling upon a body.
Are the cops still in slo-mo???
Maybe global warming is bad for us after all.
LOL!
Exactly. And look for a sudden increase when the snow melts.
Perhaps the bodies will surface after the thaw.
They need more illegal immigrants to commit the murders Americans are too cold to commit. Maybe a trainload from Siberia?
oh I guess that’s how guns got the nickname “heaters”
I think these statistics underscore just how safe and friendly New York City is.
I moved to the New York Metro area over the summer and while there are some dangerous spots just outside the city, like Newark, NJ and Bridgewater, CT; the city itself is a very nice place to be.
Now people don't generally associate New Yorkers with being friendly but so far, I have been very impressed. Coming from Boston, where people are much ruder, it's a refreshing change.
Meanwhile, in Chicago......
When I lived in NYC it was pretty safe. Chicago...never!
