Forty-eight years after he won his first Grammy Award, country music legend Glen Campbell won another honor, claiming Best Country Song at the 2015 Grammys (with co-writer Julian Raymond) for Im Not Gonna Miss You, the theme song from Glen Campbell Ill Be Me, the documentary that followed Campbell on his farewell tour as he battled Alzheimers disease.
While the 78-year-old Campbell was not in attendance, his wife Kim took to the podium to speak on behalf of her husband.
Im so proud of him tonight, she told the crowd. Its been an amazing journey. Hes been so courageous in bringing awareness to Alzheimers and caregiving. Sadly, he cant be here with us because he is in the late stages of Alzheimers, but he is healthy and cheerful.
Kim Campbell also expressed her belief that her husbands love of music has helped him survive.
I believe music kept him healthy for a longer period of time and enabled him to enjoy his life and his family, she said, even in the midst of living with a debilitating brain disease.
Campbell is one of the most celebrated artists in country history. He won multiple Grammys back in 1967, then became the first country artist to capture the prestigious Album of the Year Grammy Award in 1968.
Campbells competition for the award, which goes to the songwriters, was Eric Church and co-writer Luke Laird, for Give Me Back My Hometown; Miranda Lambert with Nicole Galyon and Natalie Hemby, for Automatic; the team of Luke Laird, Shane McAnally and Rodney Clawson, for Kenny Chesneys American Kids; and the team of Tom Douglas, Jaren Johnston, and Jeffrey Steele, for Meanwhile, Back at Mamas by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.
A co-worker once said that Alzheimer’s was the worst way to die because you died all alone.
Been a long time since I’ve given a crap about Grammys or any other awards - BUT this is really good. Maybe they stopped and listened. What else to say?
That’s what Grammys were originally supposed to represent - quality, not popularity.
I’m really glad to hear this. Glen Campbell is a national treasure. Would have like to have seen The Band Perry win for their great cover version of Campbell’s “Gentle on My Mind”:

Really??? We all die alone, not matter what.
That song is so heartbreaking.
Where to start - to make everybody happy. Glen did a lot of things, is very talented, but still a lot of things didn’t reflect him. More to come, I need something to look at.
That would be John Hartford’s song (writer)”Gentle on My Mind” which Glen Campbell was second to record and first to get a hit.
Here’s John doing it with Glen, and John, btw is an American Icon thanks to Glen Campbell and his TV show (which was also excellent):

I saw him on the final tour. His mind was wandering and he sometimes forgot the words but he could still sing and he could still play the guitar. In fact, sometimes, to find his way back to the song he’d do a guitar solo. Apparently that part of the brain hadn’t yet been effected. Funny how the mind works.
BTW, anyone who doesn’t already know this should look up Campbell’s work with the Wrecking Crew, back in the 60s. He was one of the best rock guitarists going, bar none.
The only time I heard it I cried.
Many in the early stages of Alzheimer’s get upset at their memory loss. In the later stages they don’t worry anymore.
Glen Campbell is a national treasure; what a talented singer, songwriter, guitarist, a very talented man who deserved the award.
Hmmmm while i feel sorry for the disease he has...all the coke he did also comes to mind...
According to Wikipedia, Campbell is one of four notable persons to come from tiny Delight, Pike County, southwestern AR.
Yes, Campbell played guitar on all of the Beach Boys hits in the 1960s, plus many, many, other classic pop hits for Elvis, etc.

Thanks Mr. Care and Effect! My Dad just died 6 weeks ago od the same dreadful disease at the same age as Glenn Campbell. He was a brilliant physician and never touched cocaine.
bttt
Not my favorite rendition, but if Ms. Perry wants to wear that dress and sing to me, she can sing the damn koran for all I care.
