Lawmakers have failed in past attempts to rename North Americas highest mountain, but a new proposal may have a better chance this year under a Republican Congress, according to an aide to an Alaska lawmaker who is resurrecting the effort.
U.S. Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan have introduced a bill to give Mount McKinley its historical Alaska Native name.
The Alaska Republicans announced a Senate bill Wednesday to formally call the 20,320-foot mountain by its Athabascan name, Denali, KTUU reported. The bill comes after previous efforts by Murkowski failed.

That would describe Obama perfectly.
I have an idea - why not leave it Mt. McKinley and leave the National Park it’s in Denali?
You know - the way it’s been for almost 100 years. /s
How long must we be burdened with these children and their incessant whining about everything?
This kind of legislation is SO important and must absolutely take priority over any other issues such as:
- the flooding of our country with illegals and the failure of this administration to control our borders or enforce any of our existing laws
- our out of control “entitlement” programs
- putin’s aggression, China’s boldness with disputed islands, etc
- our alienation of almost all of our historic allies
And many more
Denali means “high”.
It makes the indians seem really stupid.
Conservatives in Alaska call it Denali. As do the informed in the Lower 48.
What conservatives?
Murkowski is certainly not one, for one.
Basically all of Alaska calls it Denali. We lived there for several years.
Conservatives, Rinos, Libs, Sourdoughs, etc. They all call it Denali.
I believe it was always known as Denali until some politician or news paper editor who supported William McKinley started calling the mount McKinley.
I’ve read of rangers back in the 1930s who still called it Denali to hack off their superiors.
I WOULD deem it appropriate to name it Mount Meshuge!!
“...introduced a bill to give Mount McKinley its historical Alaska Native name.”
Forget that! If we are going to rename it, we should rename it something awesome, like “Mount Freedom”.
‘You say Denali,
And I say McKinley.
You say potato,
And I say potahto.
McKinley.
Denali.
McKinley.
Denali.
Let’s call the whole thing off.’
IIRC
Palin’s secret service code name was Denali.
Sorry, the Indians have no claim to name that mountain. All they did was stare at it from below. Five white guys were the first to climb it, that’s why whitey got to pick the name.
You climb it, you have more right than the lazy wretches who never try.
Since I have been in Alaska, I have not heard anyone refer to the mountain as “Mount McKinley”. Everyone says “Denali”. I suspect that many younger people do not even know that Mt. Mckinley is the official name.
Denali is an anagram of DENIAL.
The Redskin States?
And NAILED,
as in: previously hit
Did you cause this mess?
Since I have been in Alaska, I have not heard anyone refer to the mountain as “Mount McKinley”. Everyone says “Denali”. I suspect that many younger people do not even know that Mt. McKinley is the official name (Or who McKinley was). The name “Denali” has been in popular use for years and among climbers for decades.
This is unlike what they did in Washington, changing the name of Puget Sound to “Salish Sea”. AFAIK most people (Except those afflicted with extreme political correctness) still use the name given the area by George Vancouver.
You're making a mountain out of a molehill.
