Lawmakers have failed in past attempts to rename North Americas highest mountain, but a new proposal may have a better chance this year under a Republican Congress, according to an aide to an Alaska lawmaker who is resurrecting the effort.
U.S. Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan have introduced a bill to give Mount McKinley its historical Alaska Native name.
The Alaska Republicans announced a Senate bill Wednesday to formally call the 20,320-foot mountain by its Athabascan name, Denali, KTUU reported. The bill comes after previous efforts by Murkowski failed.

better Denali than....Obama!
Mount Reagan.
Really, got to be politically correct. what an asinine waste of money and time. Why not rename the United States to some Indian name to appease the goose stepping libtards.
I don’t think anyone’s looking to rename it Mount Obama.
(Sorry for dredging up Larry Sinclair/Reggie Love references, BTW.)
Denali or D’Allah?
decisions, decisions...
Canada’s highest peak near the Alaska border is named Mt. Logan. I think it’s named after Wolverine. :)
This is a touchy feely, phony baloney, plastic banana, good time rock and roller WASTE OF TIME!!! I lived in Alaska for four years from 82 to 86. I never heard one person refer to Denali as Mt. McKinley while I lived there. This is already a done deal. Alaska doesn’t need a couple of moronic politicians putting themselves up on the PC pedestal by submitting a BS bill like this. Murkowski the Independent Ice Princess needs to get a life.
Denali? Oh, please.
I'm going to Hell for that, aren't I?
ahahahah THANKS I needed that!
I noted it was republicans who were making the move on the renaming! I just couldnt help throwing the obama idea in for good measure
it’s the native american name for the mountain and it means “The High One”. I have no problem with giving it back that name.
So they want to rename it after an SUV?
;-)
This is stupid. I was in Alaska for a 3 week vacation several years ago, and not once did I hear this mountain referred to as anything other than Denali. Everybody calls it Denali, who really cares what the USGS calls it?
RINOs do. After a Government Motors SUV no less.
Effectively, it already has two names. Not uncommon when two cultures mix.
What is wrong with keeping it that way?
I agree it is politically correct pandering. My family and I lived in Alaska for four years. Alaskans do call the mountain Denali ( nobody up there calls it McKinley) so the name change would only be a formality nobody really cares about anyway.
Isn’t that a river in Egypt? /s
Yes! Let’s name Alaska’s mountain Mount Obama.
Its tall, cold , with a head of solid rock. Just like the effing a$$hat it would be named after.
Let the people of Alaska decide.
