Apples newest operating system, iOS 8, is installed on 72 percent of iOS devices almost five months after it first launched in September of 2014, according to new numbers Apple shared on its App Store support page for developers.
Installation numbers are up 9 percent since mid-December and have jumped 3 percent since January 20, following the launch of iOS 8.1.3 at the end of the month. As iOS 8 adoption grows, the number of users running iOS 7 has dropped to 25 percent. 3 percent of users continue to use an earlier operating system.
iOS 8 adoption has been somewhat slower than iOS 7 adoption, as iOS 7 was running on 80 percent of devices in January of 2014, compared to iOS 8s 69 percent adoption rate at that same time. Possible explanations for the slower adoption rate include the large amount of storage space required to update to iOS 8 and the major bugs the operating system has experienced. Excitement over iOS 7s complete visual redesign may have also driven a larger number of upgrades.
Apple has resolved many of the initial bugs that were found in iOS 8 with several operating system updates, including iOS 8.1, iOS 8.1.1, iOS 8.1.2, and iOS 8.1.3, which has led to an uptick in adoption, and the company has also made an effort to inform customers that its possible to install iOS 8 via iTunes to alleviate storage space issues.
Though adoption of iOS 8 has been slower than iOS 7 adoption rates, Apple is still way ahead of Android. The latest version of Android (5.0, aka Lollipop), released in November, is currently only installed on 1.6 percent of Android devices. The vast majority of Android users are still running KitKat, which was released in October 2013, or even Jelly Bean, which first debuted in June 2012.
Android updates often take a long time to propagate to customers because of the large number of different Android-based devices on the market. Android updates must go through carriers and cell phone manufacturers, who like to build their own apps and interfaces into the operating system.

Like comparing apples and sand castles.
There is a high penetration of apple evangelists around here.
Odd that they would choose a conservative forum to peddle adverts for a corporation run by a raving queer.

I think the problem is self-explanatory..
This is highly misleading as it’s up to the individual device manufacturers and the carriers to roll out Lollipop to the devices. Verizon is generally behind the other carriers because of their acceptance procedures and Samsung has only recently made it available on the S5 and Note 4. I have no skin in the game since I have both an Iphone 6 Plus and Android and Microsoft devices and they all have strengths and weaknesses but adoption rates really don’t mean very much and all Apple users are waiting for IOS 8.3 anyway which is in beta at the moment
Android has a totally different infrastructure (carrier based with multiple manufacturers) - so this "comparison" is totally meaningless...except for Fanbois slaves. Android remains far superior in market penetration

“This tag line is a Microsoft insult free zone... but if the insults to Mac users contnue..”
Why don’t you start by knocking off the unfounded swipes at Android then? Or do the special snowflakes apple kids on FR think that you get some sort of free pass?
And the unfounded swipe is? You are the troll who invades every Apple thread with negative statements and insults. What's unfactual here. Please elucidate.
I”m an apple user, and an android user, and a windows user, and I like to read FR. I am always trying to read the apple threads to see what I can learn, and DAMNED if they don’t always turn into a pig-headed, foolish food fight.
Why do you bother showing up? Just to insult mac users? Where is your Android ping list? Do you have these same food fights over there?
I just wish you mac haters would stop coming in. You ruin every thread.
“I just wish you mac haters would stop coming in. You ruin every thread.”
Are you done now?
Post stuff on FR. See people that dissent? How did that ever happen?
Anyway, The whole point of this retarded post by Swordy is to make some insinuation that “look at how Awesome iOS adaption rate is compared to how awful Android Lollipop”. It’s the classic “fragmentation” BS that Apple people have been making for years. Totally ignorant as to how Android works.
And if you bothered to read many of those oh so “hateful posts above, you would see that people had to immediately educate him as to why the comparison has NO MERIT.
But yeah, the FR special snowflakes cant deal, so scream and cry a bit more if it makes you feel better.
I think it may range from the paid to the crazy.

I'm trying to figure out how insulting Microsoft is going to do anything about Android users insulting Mac users.
Exactly. Use the best tool for the job. Realize that “best” is often highly subjective and dependent upon priorities that differ in strength and relative order for various users.
Updated my phone 5s, went like a dream. I don’t know what new functions this brings me as I never had any problem with the last version.
I have a technical question. A friend has an Ipad II that won’t connect to WIFI unless you’re less than ten feet from it. It’s got the latest IOS and other than that, it’s fine. His Ipad 1 works fine.
Anyone have any ideas? I’m not averse to cracking it open since it’s pretty useless now; I read somewhere that there’s a defective wifi antenna which I don’t know how much I believe it.
Like moths drawn to the light, Apple haters are repeatedly and mindlessly attracted to any thread related to Apple. There, the Apple haters irresistibly feel compelled to enter posts attacking Apple products and/or Apple users.
We need to feel sorrow and pity for these poor sufferers of ADS (Apple Derangement Syndrome) as they are helpless before the compulsions that their ADS disease visits upon them. Prayers up for their recovery from this dread affliction.
Where is that pie chart showing Microsoft Windows installs vs Apple OS computer installs? Something like 92% Windows and the rest Apple and Linux.
