At least seven people were killed and 9 injured after a car collided with a Metro-North train in Westchester on Tuesday night, according to law enforcement sources.

The vehicle and the front of the Harlem line train to burst into flames killing one in the car and six on the train, sources said. One of the injured was listed in very serious condition, sources said. The northbound train left Grand Central Station at 5:45 p.m., during peak commuter hours, when it struck the car, which was on the train tracks, an hour later in Valhalla, according to officials.

Authorities say the car and the front end of the Metro-North train exploded almost immediately after impact.

My gosh...a train hit a car and it caused a fire...? A car/train collision doesn’t result in a fire, unless it is a part of terrorism.

Takes a bit to blow up the front of a train.

Like 10-20 gallons of gasoline?

I had friends who were train engineers. Their biggest fear was hitting a vehicle and being incinerated in the process.

People underestimate how much energy is in a tank of gas. Don't do it.

Wasn’t the Mustang II just a Pinto/Bobcat with a different body?

Freight and passenger trains are different, too.

That’s actually still the BRP, not the Taconic. Cross over to get up to WCC, right turn to get to Kensico dam. You can actually cross over there make a left and go southbound towards the County Center, if you are quick, or crazy.
People have been going around that “gate” for years, trains usually are going pretty slow after leaving the North White Plains station.

Thanks for the clarification. It shows up as the Taconic on Google Maps!

Senator Richard Blumenthal (Idiot - CT) is already sticking his head in front of press cameras to try and gain some kind of political advantage.

What a piece of human filth...

A car/train collision doesn’t result in a fire, unless it is a part of terrorism.

Pretty broad statement you make there. Are you sure of that?

How many gallons of gasoline does a typical SUV hold? Is gasoline combustible? Would a gas tank rupture if that SUV was struck broadside by a train traveling, say, 55 mph? (Passenger trains can run at up to 79 mph in that section I believe.) Suppose the train was powered by a 600 volt DC third rail (it was). Would a collision with a metallic object (for instance an SUV) cause metal debris to contact that third rail and thus possibly spark since most metals just happen to conduct electricity? Would such a spark if produced cause ignition of, say, 20 gallons of gasoline spewing from a ruptured fuel tank on that SUV? Would such an ignition of, say, 20 gallons of gasoline produce a fire of explosive proportions? Could all of the above occur without a terrorist involved? Could driver stupidity which allowed the SUV to be on the tracks have anything to do with it? (After all, an intelligent driver knows not to enter a grade crossing unless they can safely complete the crossing, rush hour traffic and red lights being part of that equation.)

Now... Please explain your stated conclusion...

Freight and passenger trains are different

This was a passenger MU type train, not your typically pictured big locomotive in front and cars behind like Amtrak type train.

The engineer is sitting right there in the front with only his glass window separating him from the object about to be collided with.

I would expect that one of the fatalities was the engineer...

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. . .
Sorry, I had the wrong information.

You are correct, the collision took place by the Taconic State Pkwy at that location.
Commerce Street crossing by the cemetery, I was incorrectly pointing to the “Cemetary Rd” crossing.

“Collision”, not “accident”. That simply can’t happen if one follows basic traffic instructions. The lights and bells go off, then the bar comes down. For the bar to come down on ones car, looks like someone was trying to run the warning lights. There really are very few accidents, mostly terrible driving decisions.

No problem!

I wouldn't be so quick to assume that the car tried to run the warning lights. I'm envisioning a scenario where there was a red light at the nearby intersection and a line of traffic that extended back over the railroad crossing ... or perhaps another scenario where the vehicle got stuck in ice or snow at the crossing. The initial reports said something about the driver getting out of the vehicle to check something before it was hit.

The story I saw this morning indicated that the engineer was treated at a nearby hospital but wasn't one of the fatalities.

Go figure.
