Why Jim Harbaugh is worth $40 million to the University of Michigan’s football team
Washington Post ^ | January 02, 2015 | John Feinstein

The University of Michigan’s decision this week to commit at least $40 million to Jim Harbaugh over the next seven years raised quite a few eyebrows. Forty million dollars — $5 million a year to start, along with a $2 million signing bonus — for a football coach?

Can jock-Armageddon, when the entire bloated-with-corporate-dollars sports world explodes, be far behind?

Actually, Armageddon has already pretty much come and gone in college athletics. The attitude of many players at the most visible schools was summed up by a tweet sent two years ago by Cardale Jones, who will start at quarterback for Ohio State in the national championship game on Jan. 12: “Why should we go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL,” he tweeted shortly after arriving at Ohio State. “We ain’t come to play SCHOOL, classes are POINTLESS.”

To paraphrase “A Chorus Line”: Honesty 10, grammar 3.

Harbaugh won’t be the highest-paid coach in college football in 2015, even if you calculate his first-year salary at $7 million (bonus included).

Alabama Coach Nick Saban will make $7.2 million. In fact, at least a dozen football coaches will make at least $4 million in the coming year. According to USA Today’s annual report on coaching compensation, almost every football coach among the 65 schools in the “power-five” conferences makes seven figures, and, as Harbaugh’s deal proves, there’s no sign of that trend reversing itself anytime soon.

Unfortunately, your post #36 makes no sense and has wandered completely away from the point of the discussion. coaches salaries. The courts are going to smack down the athlete compensation ban, which unfortunately may mean the end of college athletics as we have known it.

And for the record I’m a huge college football fan. I just wish things were done privately as it should be. M an Ohioan tha cheers once a year for UM, and it’s for the big rivalry game. Go Blue.

Once upon a time on FR, we used to be able to at length fully discuss issues and respectfully disagree. We could take each others’ personal experiences and accept it. We could indulge fellow FReepers’ ideas. If somebody posted something we disagreed with, we could attempt to see multiple sides of the issue and not simply our own. After the last six years that has become a thing of the past. I blame George W. Bush for that ;)

And for the record the facts, even the facts YOU BROUGHT, show you’re wrong.

Ok. So free tuition at UM for all? It’s profitable, right?

Ummm... Government pays to let a D+ dipshit go to a higher learning school.

Every jack-ass professor gets their money. You need to really ask yourself why the US Government subsidizes a damn thing.

Talk to me when your paying 7.99 a pound for pork.

So now you’ve been reduced to just stupid lies. So we all know you’re wrong. You should have left when you said you were done. I’ll help you out. Bye.

I understand the point that you are trying to make, but the words that you used to make it do not present a coherent argument. The problem is not your opinion, it’s your grammar.

I’m done also. I have to get another dose of ibuprofen and milk into the baby so that I can, finally, go to bed. FR is what helps keep me up for this, and it’s what helps keep me up through the night when I’m up with the baby.

I am reminded of Andy Van Slykes' quote regarding the trade of Barry Bonds from the Pirates to the Giants:
