Historians take issue with director Ava DuVernay focus on former president Lyndon B. Johnson

Days away from the wide release of “Selma,” a controversy around the film is gaining steam as historians take issue with its depiction of president Lyndon B. Johnson clashing with Martin Luther King, Jr. over voting rights.

In a lengthy New York Times story about historians taking issue with the movie, Diane McWhorter, the author of “Carry Me Home: Birmingham, Alabama: The Climactic Battle of the Civil Rights Revolution,”argued Thursday that the movie is not truthful in depicting LBJ (played by Tom Wilkinson) fighting King on staging protests in Selma.

“Everybody has to take license in movies like this, and it can be hard for nit-pickers like me to suspend nit-picking,” she told The Times. “But with the portrayal of L.B.J., I kept thinking, ‘Not only is this not true, it’s the opposite of the truth.’ ”

Americans and others get perverted history lessons from the movies. That is why so many of them are dumb as posts on real history. They seem to forget that movies are entertainment first, a gloss over of history second, or an outright fabrication of history.

Shakespeare... wrote History plays that were about as accurate as a soap opera.

When the truth and the legend conflict, print the legend.

Shakespeare's accounts, being so vivid, are those generally believed by non-specialists.

Or about how Dems voted down civil rights under Eisenhower because they wanted to get credit for it under a Dem president?

I think those who in recent years have been blaming LBJ for a part in the JFK assassination are similar as in this movie that appears to be a bunch of hogwash, horse feathers, rubbish. I haven’t seen solid evidence that the grade school teacher Lyndon was some cold-hearted killer.

In light of the controversy depicting a Black man as the next James Bond, what if, instead of David Oyelowo playing Dr. King, it was Rosie O’ Donnell in drag? You couldn’t pay me to see anything that Oprah is involved with.

If Oprah was really that concerned about racial equality, she would have Denzel Washington play the part of LBJ.

JFK opposed King's march on Washington DC. Someone should make a film about the Kennedys holed up running interference and monitoring the situtation.

The kindly grade school teacher, LBJ?? Where have you been for the past seventy years?? Have you ever read about the dead bodies found on the LBJ Ranch, one of which was an AG Dept official who just happened to be investigating fraud by LBJ and who committed “suicide’ on the ranch through some impossible contortion? Or about Billie Sol Estes, an ex-business associate who spent the rest of his life telling stories about a man he called the world’s largest crook? Bobby Baker, the secretary of the Senate under LBJ? The “win” over Coke Stevenson in the 1948 Senate primary when Lyndon got all 198 votes in a “found” ballot box after a disputed election? How LBJ became a multimillionaire (never explained) on a congressman’s salary?

I think Lady Bird was more deviant than Lyndon was. It was my understanding she was the one with the money.

Reminicent of the one who will not be named under WJC.

Never understood why the “authorities” reacted so violently to the marchers in Selma. Didn’t they know they looked like complete idiots? Why not politely but resolutely tell the marchers “no”?

The question about LBJ, Civil Rights and Voting Rights was settled in 1964 when LBJ supported the Civil Rights Bill and Goldwater opposed the Civil Rights Bill.

Had Goldwater supported Civil Rights, he would have won the 1964 Election and the Republicans would still win the majority of African American votes.

Haven’t they picked at the healing scab for far too long?
LBJ bent this nation backwards to appease and fund the hurts.
Lotta no good that has done with pee poor results. Get over it already.

Do you suppose the movie will show that Martin Luther King was a Republican?
