CHURCHILL’S SISTER-IN-LAW URGED HIM NOT TO CONVERT TO ISLAM

One of the nation’s best loved countrymen, Winston Churchill is best remembered for his role in overcoming the Nazi threat, and later for denouncing the Soviet regime’s Iron Curtain. But few are aware of his fascination with the orient and his strong admiration for Islam, which even led him to adopting Arab attire in private. Now a newly uncovered letter sent to Churchill by his future sister-in-law has revealed that, such was his obsession, she was moved to urge him not to convert to Islam.

In 1907, Churchill wrote to Lady Litton: “You will think me a pasha [rank of distinction in the Ottoman Empire]. I wish I were.” In the same year, Lady Gwendoline Bertie, who would go on to marry Churchill’s brother Jack wrote to him in order to urge him to rein in his obsession with all things Oriental, saying: “Please don’t become converted to Islam; I have noticed in your disposition a tendency to orientalise [fascination with the Orient and Islam], Pasha-like tendencies, I really have.”

Churchill called them “Mohammedans” and, as I recall, thought they built nothing and did nothing. It's also been reported that Charles dresses up as a muzzie behind locked doors. Who knows?

Perhaps it was more of an interest in arabic culture and not islam, which are two entirely different things. There are plenty of oriental rugs in western homes, but it doesn’t mean the owners have an interest in islam.

That is unconvincing. I might (and probably have) written to friends, "Please don't become a Euro-weenie Socialist. I see you are playing hacky-sack and now drive a Fiat. I really have."

In such a line, I am basically saying, don't acept the trappings of teh Euro-weenie socialists, that you might not be mistaken for one . . . NOT That the friend in question was actually contemplating joining the Fabian society or the G.B Shaw Fan Club. I think something like that happened here.

THE MAN LIKED HIS LIQUOR WAY TOO MUCH to be a Mohammadan. He most likely enjoyed plenty of pork based products in his time as well.

He was just 30 years old anyway - Churchill didn’t become the Churchill we know and admire today until he was in his 60’s. He was 66 when WW2 started approx.

IMHO that’s “sowing your wild oats” & is usually practiced with a wide circle of women free to make their own choices, not harem slaves subject to a pasha’s whim.

British Orientalism is worthy of separate study as it influenced Britain’s foreign policy all across the Middle East and can explain its sometimes frosty relations with the state of Israel.
