On Peyton Manning, NFL referee Bill Vinovich, the Broncos, and facemask penalties
MileHighReport ^ | Dec 26 2014 | Kyle Montgomery

Peyton Manning is 0-6 with this guy as referee.

...

The Denver Broncos, with Peyton Manning, are 0-4 when Bill Vinovich is referee. In fact, Peyton Manning is 0-6 in his career with Vinovich, since Vinovich was promoted to referee in 2004.

...

Before we begin, a disclaimer.

I know the Broncos didn't play well enough to win against the Bengals. I know the refs didn't throw four interceptions Monday night (although you could argue they threw one). I know Peyton Manning wasn't clutch, and I know the defense struggled, and I know all of these things contributed far more to the loss than Vinovich and crew.

...

First, a history lesson.

Bill Vinovich has been referee for four Broncos games since 2012, all resulting in Broncos losses. All were one-score games late in the fourth quarter. Two of them went into overtime.

The closeness, to me, implies that neither team dominated the other in these respective games, and bad reffing could have made a difference. So was there bad reffing?

...

Some Broncos fans, to this day, blame Bill Vinovich for that loss in January 2013. His is a name they haven't forgotten. The rest of us are only now jumping on that bandwagon.

...

Some Broncos fans have petitioned for Vinovich to be fired. That's fine. You can sign it if you like (I have not and don't plan to at this time). I do hope this exploration reaches his and the NFL's eyes and ears, just as I'm convinced the petition to ban Phil Simms reached his and CBS'

Refs gotta eat. Why would they want to deprive him of game fix money?

They are calling way too many hands on the face penalty. I HATE flag football. Let ‘em play.

Well there you have it. The rest is just whining.

The NFL is slowly making me not watch the games anymore....

The penalties being called are ridiculous....

Late flags, arbitrary calls, inconsistent calls, seemingly “protected” QB’s, and just flat out bad calls....

You can watch a play where a penalty is called and watch the exact same play the other team ran and no penalty called.....

Refs have prefs.

Then, there is F-bombing Tom Brady. It seems the networks like to catching him on the sidelines when he is having rough game. It doesn’t take an expert in lip reading.

Agree. There are just too many flags for seemingly minor infractions.

They should ONLY throw flags at egregious fouls.

Peyton Manning is 38. He used to be pretty good, I guess.

The inconsistency is what bothers me, and then they miss it again on the replay. At least with the non-union refs we knew they were learning on the fly. The “professionals” have no excuse to be so bad.

I know the Broncos didn't play well enough to win against the Bengals.

And they didn't play *nearly* well enough to beat the Patriots.Maybe Manning's problem can be found in "MileHighReport"! ;-)

He had pretty good stats last year too. How'd that work out for him in, um February?

I have only watched, maybe a half-dozen games this year.

When everyone in the stadium and at home, watch the refs botch a replay, I just lose interest.

I only agree with the statement about banning Phil Simms, and would add Ron Jawarski to the banning! Both are dispicable!

Each officiating crew in the pros (MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL) differs in some way regarding how strictly they call penalties or how lenient they are it letting things go.

Some MLB umps have lenient strike zones that favor pitchers.

Some NBA officials will call the slightest bump a foul (why I no longer watch NBA games), while others let them play on.

The NHL officiating is probably the best.

I’m glad to see the NFL and NCAA officials often meeting to confer on possible penalties before making their rulings.

He went to the Super Bowl. That's called a good year. There are 11 guys on the field at a time from both teams, and the Seahawks were far better that day on all sides of the ball.
