Analysis of DNA from Richard III has thrown up a surprise: evidence of infidelity in his family tree.
Scientists who studied genetic material from remains found in a Leicester car park say the finding might have profound historical implications.
Depending on where in the family tree it occurred, it could cast doubt on the Tudor claim to the English throne or, indeed, on Richard's.
The study is published in the journal Nature Communications.
But the scientists would not be drawn on what meaning it might have - if any - for the current Royal Family, as it was still unknown when the break, or breaks, in the lineage occurred.
In 2012, scientists extracted genetic material from the remains discovered on the former site of Greyfriars Abbey, where Richard was interred after his death in the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.
'Overwhelming evidence'
Their analysis shows that DNA passed down on the maternal side matches that of living relatives, but genetic information passed down on the male side does not.

Well, Paine’s opinion not withstanding, “possession is nine tenths of the rule”, “to the victor goes the spoils”, and “the winner gets to write the history”...
William the Bastard won so it all starts with him, like it or not...
I think that has pretty much been proven (that the remains are Richard’s, or his body double who happens to be related.)
Well, maybe.
As that article shows, for people to be able to track their genetic ancestry back 1000 years, you have to assume that the father of each and every child in that tree was the women’s husband.
Something that is at minimum unlikely.
Going back just 500 years and allowing only 3 generations per century, I would have 32,768 maternal ancestors. The chance that ALL of them were virtuous approaches nullity.
That’s the one.
Yeah, I’m one of a dying breed.
I've been studying medieval English kings for nearly thirty years and I'm not aware of any historians giving any credence to rumors of John of Gaunt's illegitimacy.
John of Gaunt is easily the most powerful person in English royal history to never be king and it was the void left after his death that really began the War of the Roses. However, rumors that he was illegitimate did not appear until late in his life and were quite possibly started by supporters of Richard II who hated the Lancasters.
There is zero evidence that Philippa of Hainault was unfaithful to Edward III and, in fact, she was given far more authority than most queens of her day were and would seem implausible if Edward mistrusted her for any reason (keep in mind that he imprisoned his own mother). Further it is implausible that Edward III would have given John of Gaunt so much wealth and power if he didn't believe he was his son.
It's far more likely that the infidelity occurred much later in the Beaufort line.
He was a good bowler, and a good man. He was... he was one of us.
The Tudors are Welsh Gigaloes.
Look live Richard III. !!!!
Hmmm. Bonnie Prince Franz just doesn't have the same ring to it, does it?
