Man injects himself with Ebola DELIBERATELY in a bid to battle the deadly disease

A man has revealed he has been injected with the Ebola virus ON PURPOSE in a bid to fight the deadly disease.

Peter Hubbard said he hopes the small risk he is taking could help create a vaccine to prevent further outbreaks of the disease, which has claimed thousands of lives in west Africa.

Speaking from his apartment in Alexandria, Virginia, Mr Hubbard, a consultant who specialises in natural gas and peer markets, said: "I get a lot of satisfaction out of the fact that this could potentially develop into a viable vaccine that prevents another outbreak. It might not help out with the current outbreak but it could prevent a future one, so that's a real plus in my book."

Mr Hubbard, 35, is one of 20 people taking part in clinical trials for a vaccine at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States.

I wish this pioneer the best in his efforts, I really hope this works out, he survives and achieves his objective in one "not melting" piece.

“Despite being injected with parts of the virus on September 9, Mr Hubbard revealed that he felt so healthy he has even taken part in a MARATHON.
He said: “I feel great, yeah. In fact, I couldn’t tell where the injection site was thirty minutes after it. I ran a marathon on Sunday. I’m alive and kicking.”

WHAT!!!!!!!!! Contagious Maybe? nah don’t worry about it.

Is it too late to take out a life insurance policy on this guy (with me as the beneficiary)?

Sheesh. What's a large risk?

The article says he did it as part of a vaccine trial. He actually got another virus engineered with a couple of Ebola genes. The idea is this might stimulate antibodies that would attack the Ebola virus itself. It doesn’t sound very high risk to the guy.

"The vaccine he is trialling, co developed by GlaxoSmithKline and the NIH, consists of a common cold virus, called an adenovirus, that has been engineered to carry TWO genes of the Ebola virus."

So it sounds like he was not actually injected with the Ebola virus. Headline writers strike again.

”… into a viable vaccine that prevents another outbreak."

One of the reasons for the outbreak of ebola in Africa was lax quarantine procedures.

When he gets symptomatic, maybe he’ll go on a tour of DC!

(after this past Tuesday, he could also do some good by spending a lot of time in Fairfax County)

He's testing the vaccine in an in vivo trial. One can measure the titer all day long (in vitro) but the proof is the vaccine challenge. This is how vaccines become validated. My hats off to him as he is taking a high risk.

Here's one of the studies on Ebola vaccine safety. It allows for testers as young as 2 months old. I couldn't find one where the person is actually exposed to Ebola.

Isn’t this how new strains of a virus are born? Couldn’t something like this create a strain of Ebola that spreads like the common cold? Unforeseen consequence?
