The obesity epidemic in men could be fueled by the female sex hormone estrogen, scientists claim.
Experts believe the hormone could also be causing the well-documented drop in sperm count among Western men.
They said men in affluent countries are becoming feminized as they come into contact with products containing the female sex hormone.
Compounds found in some plastic items, including drain pipes, and soy food products can mimic the effects of estrogen, scientists said.
Secreted by the ovaries in premenstrual women, estrogen is known to cause weight gain, inhibiting the thyroid gland and affecting other areas of the brain.

You talkin' to ME!?
I knew there must be a reason that I hate tofu.
I've mentioned it for years as a reason for early puberty for girls (once menses onset 14-16 now much earlier, even 10) younger women getting breast cancer in 20 30s, not to mention fatter girls and women.
The article mentions tofu as a carrier. I guess I should minimize intake. I think I can do that.
Tofu is soybean curd. Some soybean products can mimic female hormones. Liberal girly-men tend to consume mass quantities of tofu.
Connect the dots.
Taught that person a lesson.
Yes, I often shake my head when I see a man order a soy latte at Starbucks. I often have to stop myself from asking them if they are low on estrogen. I really doubt most men know how much estrogen they are getting in their soy latte.
include beer in that list....
Heh. That was clever.
I am 75....amazing how many rich widowed ladies wandering around....all that money you guys put into life insurance....she is enjoying with her young boy-friend and of course he is enjoying the free ride that you so gratefully provided....have another beer and watch the TV games....
More likely all of the female hormones being excreted into our water supplies by women on birth control pills. Water treatment systems do a very poor job of removing them.
Its a real shame, both sides of the issue are positioned such that, this idea is likely never to be studied.
The problem is effectively removing ethinyl estradiol can be quite costly. Governmental estimates put the cost of upgrading about 1,360 wastewater treatment plants across England and Wales so they can comply with a proposed limit at between $41 billion and $47 billion (32 billion and 37 billion), according to Richard Owen, a professor at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom.
“The big question is, ‘Are we willing to pay this as a society?’” Owen told LiveScience. “Or, alternatively, ‘would we prefer to live with the environmental impact?’”
In their Nature commentary, Owen and Susan Jobling, an ecotoxicologist at the University of Brunel, write that more public debate is need on the proposed regulation. [7 Surprising Facts About the Pill]
They intended to draw attention to this environmental dilemma, not to suggest that women should not have access to birth control, Owen told LiveScience.
In the environment
EE2, a synthetic hormone, is only one of a cocktail of natural and synthetic hormones that humans excrete into wastewater, including other estrogens. EE2 has a potent biological effect at low levels.
“Animals are exquisitely sensitive to it,” Jobling told LiveScience.
The body of a fish or a frog reacts to EE2 as if it were a natural estrogen, “demasculinizing” male animals and creating a condition called intersex that interferes with an animal’s ability to reproduce, Jobling said. Intersex males often produce eggs in their testes.
It’s not yet clear if levels of EE2 found in waterways affect mammals’ reproductive cycle, she said.
Years ago I worked in the research library of a chemical manufacturer. I remember reading an article about how female hormones in the water of lakes and rivers was causing some male fish and amphibians not to be fully-developed as males. So I’ve always wondered if that could happen to humans too.
Two percent of the population affected?
Back when “Boys Beware” came out, there was no preponderance of estrogen or its derivatives, though. We did have Hollywood and all the Communists though.

I’m probably just a little older, and I see the same re rich widow ladies.
In our core group of friends, originally 8 couples, we have 3 rich widows. I’ll not be surprised if in a year, there will be 5 rich widows.
Their homes are paid for and increasing in value or they got large reverse mortgages. A couple have sold their homes and moved into condo’s without extra bedrooms or basements to avoid adult children and grandkids wanting to live with NaNa for a few years. They have pensions, double SS and nice IRAs or annuities.
Exactly, Dave.
Also, since plastics do affect estrogen as well, keep drinking coffee out of plastic or styrofoam, and eat food stored or even cooked in plastic too. So you can be an over-estrogen filled guy.
Seriously, drink from glass or metal only, and eat real food that isn’t packaged. Get exercise and avoid soy! Don’t eat out so much because GMO soybean oil is everywhere.
