How To Get a Family of Four Prepped–In The Quickest and Easiest Way Possible (Shortened)
The Survivalist Blog ^ | 9/10/14 | M.D. Creekmore

This morning as I was trying to catch up on my email (I get a massive amount of email each month, last month over 3,000), I opened a great one from John W. In a nutshell John, is new to prepping and hasn’t really done anything prep-wise yet, but he has been thinking and making plans.

John said that he has his home on two acres paid-off, and that he has a job and works to support his wife and two children (one 6 and the other 9 years old). He said that he knows from all of the news and the tell-tell signs that something big is coming, and that his main fear is a total economic collapse.

He said that he has $10,000 to spend on preps and that he wanted to be ready as quickly as possible, without all of the buying a can of food here and another can another day or a few extra cans each time he goes to the grocery store. He also insists on long-term storage foods, with a shelf-life of 25 years or more, because he doesn’t want to be bothered with all of the rotating and other stuff involved when stockpiling perishable foods.

I bought trichlor for that purpose.
Of course, there’s some additional dilution steps necessary,

but I have enough for 30,000 gallons.

thing like this will work:

You can get a hose attachment that connects to the Large propane bottles like you use for your grill.

Yes, that would work and pretty quickly, too. The bigger picture of fireplace alterations or wood burning stoves might have to financially wait a bit longer. I could put a griddle on that and cook all kinds of stuff the kids like. Pictures! I do love the pictures! So helpful for this frazzled mom! Thank you!

What would be a good inexpensive option for warming up food should we be without power for long?

Sterno stoves can be obtained as camping supply places. An alternative is to construct what is known as a volcano stove, a small, wood fired 'stove' that can be built from a metal coffee can (#10) and a couple soup cans. DIY guides to make one are all over the internet.

LOL! Glad you weren’t hurt, but it sounds as though you gained a new appreciation for the term “Pillar of Fire!”

““And works for more things then cooking.”

“Elaborate, Please. LOL! ;)”

Coconut oil and even the whole coconut is what could be termed a true “miracle food,” IMHO!

I have a life-long STRONG dislike of those little white bits of dried coconut. (Ptui- ptui-ptui)

HOWEVER:
The oil has a different character altogether, as does the “Manna” which is the meat with some of the coconut oil in it. The flour made from coconut is a treasure for those who need to avoid wheat and gluten products.

The oil can be extremely healing to dry skin.

The oil has antibiotic properties, externally and internally. It is very digestible and has gotten a very bad rap from the govt/do-gooder/heart disease industry for the past 20 years or so. In fact, the movie industry a long time ago used coconut oil almost exclusively then they were persuaded by the food police to stop using it, and movie popcorn didn’t taste quite as good after that, imho.

It can help with a whole host of conditions which one might not think could be ascribed to an oil.

Dr. Bruce Fife has written several books on the benefits and uses of coconut in its various forms.
http://www.coconutresearchcenter.org/

http://www.coconutresearchcenter.org/books.htm

Coconut oil is a saturated fat, but it is made of up what is called medium-chain trigylcerides, which is a 50 cent way of saying that the molecule is smaller than the other saturated fats, and the body CAN handle it very easily.

In fact, this property of the medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) is what gives it an amazing ability to help with brain and nerve dysfunction.

There are those who are in the medical community who are saying that Alzheimers is actually a Type III form of diabetes, because the use of glucose in the brain goes haywire during that disease. What has been learned is that the body can break down the MCTs quickly, and the good stuff goes directly to the liver where it can be then manufactured into an alternative source of food for the brain (Ketones.)

If you have not already done so, look at what Mary Newport has learned about this. Her husband was diagnosed with early Alzheimers. She is a doctor, and started researching everything she could lay her hands on to try to help him.

What she learned from the literature is that MCTs have been shown to be that alternative food source for the brain. She started feeding her husband coconut oil. He responded in an amazing manner. You can read their story on her web site and in her book. It is very inspiring and while everyone is different, it is a very hopeful piece of info to have, imho.

I think that coconut oil has earned a deserved spot in every prepper’s pile of goodies.

Diana I W, this may be more than you wanted to know -— but you DID ask! ;-D

[I’m getting a message here from the side: Darlin’ really wants to emphasize the importance of that antibiotic property!]

My husband made one of those. I forgot about that. I think it made the move. He hasn’t organized his building yet because he’s working all the time! He could set it up for me but I’m not sure if I would know what to do with it. I think my family needs to practice some alternative cooking on the weekends until I get used to not having all the modern conveniences.

take the time and look it up on the internet. there are a number of youtube sites that give a pretty simple method of building as well as using one.

Re: Coconut oil
I think you’ll love it. I take about a tsp - Tbsp per day, and it just gives me an undefinable yet tangible sense of well-being!

I will put it into my oatmeal, chili, or stew. Also, as popcorn once in a while.

It is also REALLY good mixing it with peanut butter, coco or carob powder, and pea powder or whey powder for extra protein, and sweetener of choice if needed (I use stevia) then freeze it for a fake uncooked fudge! Yum!

We don’t have coconut oil here so had it on my list when I was at a decent sized Walmart last week. A little small container, about a 4” cube, was $25! Nope, ain’t gonna happen. Yes, I see online it is less so don’t understand the price difference but it is still over my budget.

My eyes glazed over on the posted article. Not many people have thousands of dollars earmarked for prepping.

Heard tonight on the news they’re pulling Colgate Total and a couple other toothpastes because the tiny pearls in it don’t desolve and are being found in fish. Who knew you’re supposed to brush your fish’s teeth?

Sit a couple cans of veggies on the car dashboard. Most canned goods don’t need to be heated so heating is a want rather than a need.

Make a foil covered cardboard box solar oven. Do a search online. There’s also a solar oven that uses a reflective windshield sun blocker. These little practically free solar ovens will cook anything you want from meat to bread and there’s no smoke to alert the neighborhood.

You’d be surprised how many such prep supplies you already have stuffed in the back of a closet. Go through the house like you’re doing a garage sale or a major spring cleaning. Before you put anything in the trash, think how it could be used in prepping. All that unused sports equipment may have a use. Consider alternative uses for the kids’ kits for this or that. Those old student backpacks, keep them for small emergency packs for those who can’t carry huge ones. Don’t forget about entertainment with board games and arts and crafts.

LOL
I won’t be flossing or brushing fish teeth either.

I used to use Colgate Total back when I used conventional toothpaste. Now I use some kind of herbal stuff. And I figured that during the apocalypse I can use baking soda to brush my teeth.

When I dehydrate potatoes, I slice them raw, into salt water first. The salt water keeps them from turning black in the drying process. I also salt water soak apples and pears before drying, same reason. Does not negatively impact flavor.

Coconut oil is the bomb.

I get mine at honeyville by the gallon. If anyone has found it cheaper anywhere else I’d love love love to hear about it!

I cook with it, grease pans with it, use it as a moisturizer and sometimes hair conditioner.

Also, I do not pre-cook the spuds. I don’t pre-cook anything I dehydrate (including meat). But that is just me. I’m lazy.

I told my husband we need to unpack the camping gear that’s out in his building and bring it into the basement. I don’t want mice getting to the sleeping bags! We do have a decent start but our last house had the gas stove so I never really worried too much about short term outages. I’ve always been able to feed everyone warm food from the stove. It’s different at the new house and I can’t really afford to go out and buy a brand new stove.

I tend to throw things away before I think. I can’t stand clutter with this many kids. If everyone only has a little clutter, the combination of it all makes my head spin. I just need to keep unpacking and get us organized then I will breathe a bit easier.

Thanks for the solar oven tips. I’ll keep googling and Pinteresting in the evenings after the kids have gone to bed to get the priorities in order. I’m so grateful for these threads!
