According to a new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, running 5 minutes per day can reduce an individuals risk of premature death by about 3 years. Researchers found that people who ran less than an hour per week also saw an increase in lifespan, not just a decrease in risk of premature death. The study took place over the course of 15 years, testing participants ranging in age from 18-100.

I think my 11 year old nephew might have gained 20 lbs this summer playing XBox
Just like the shlub that only got his exercise from changing the channel on the TV while eating KFC.

Does this mean that Jim Fixx would have died at 20 instead of 52 if he was not a runner?
I stopped reading when I got to the line that said they tested people from 18 to 100. I wonder how much exercise the 100 year olds got? I wonder if the 100 year olds could even roll over in bed. I think the more exercise you get the sooner your joints wear out and you have to get new ones.
I didn’t get my skeletal problems from sitting on the couch.
Mine seem to have. Use or lose it also applies to bones and muscles.
You need SOME exercise.
walking is fine
running would hurt until I lose some more weight
I love the avalanche of excuses to not exercise at all.
5 minutes of semi-strenuous activity a day is just too much?
What about quality of life for your last 20 years? If you don’t move around, sometimes aggressively, you lose the ability to do so. Early. There’s a universe of difference between destroying your knees from running dozens of miles a week, and just running a little. The idea that working into a jog or light run for five minutes is somehow going to end your knees is garbage.
And if you ALREADY destroyed your knees or just refuse to get outside, there are elliptical running machines. I am a huge believer in these machines, especially learning how to use them WITHOUT the handles if you can. It works your core and balance while you get a wicked cardio workout FAST and without any knee impact.
Frankly, I think almost everyone should either own one or use one at the gym.

My grandfather commuted/worked until he was 92, and lived to be 94. He drank with others and smoked a pipe and cigarettes.
His “secret” was eating what he needed, and no more; tomatoes, lentils, an occasional steak, and what hosts served him when out for dinner — always in small portions. He ate very few carbohydrates; one small piece of toast with butter was about the most.
He lived long and healthy.
The chemical cocktails most Americans eat can't be adding years.
Oh No! Don’t tell me you are fat! I have mental image of you as being 6’3” and 220 pounds of solid muscle. Well you ruined that! :)
Exercise and sunshine, both needed to keep me balanced.
Well, I'm now too old to die prematurely, so I guess I can skip the running now, too.
All and I mean ALL of the people I worked with in the 80’s and 90’s were runners. Most are on their second hip replacement and have enough knee jobs to start a Rockets squad. No thanks to running. Besides those extra years are on the crappy end of life.
Unfortunately I am only 6’2” and a bit overweight but I always wondered how long it would take to lose it if I tried. Would it be worth a shot?
I blame it on me being a daydreamer. I’ll call it my “trade”. Daydreamer by Trade... heh. Gotta be a science fiction story in that.
It doesn't matter who said 2+2=5, it remains invalid. See and think for yourself -- the study simply measured correlations on non-randomized samples (namely, the researchers didn't assign randomly half the subjects to the exercise group and and half to non-exercise, but subjects selected themselves for reasons beyond control and largely unknown to researchers).
Claiming causal relation between correlated variables on such samples is a junk science based on a logical fallacy as trivial as 2+2=5, no matter who claims it.
