A war veteran who builds furniture in his garage and gives it to military families in need could be forced to shut down the saws.
A homeowners association is telling Dennis Kocher he needs to close up shop after years of doing business, or he could be fined between $100 and $1,000.

Preppers’ PING!!
My post #19 this thread. :-)
It’s not that you under 5,000 rounds.
It’s more important that you 5,000 rounds down.
See what I did there? It’s subtle.
Wonder why they jumped his bones after ten years. Makes no sense when his neighbors support his activities.
I can see somebody having a problem with the guy just starting out doing what he’s doing, but to let it ride ten years, and then bust him is not right IMO.
I have a workshop in which I build all sorts of things, but then I’m out in the sticks with no HOA.
But the fact that he is not selling the furniture should.
According to the article, someone has complained that he is "producing odors and noxious fumes," basically the same complaints someone might make if the next door neighbor smokes. Unless he is running a large scale operation, some drying varnish is not going to reasonably affect any neighbors.
If he is not running a commercial business and the "odors and noxious fumes" do not rise to the level that someone could successfully sue him as a public nuisance (generally pig farms and waste dumps) then it is his business what he does in his own home.
Of course, that is why I refuse to live in a subdivision with a homeowners association or in a house within pissing distance of a neighbor.
:)
Zing!
As an aside, if what he says is true, how does he accomplish simple home repairs/maintenance.
Another reason to read purchase agreements before signing one.
Playing gardener or farmer is more “survivally” than playing war...
For my ‘battle’ rifle I figure a soldier on patrol carries 210 rounds. I figure in SHTF you can only live through so many fire fights so 2100 rounds is 10 fire fights. The chances of you living through more that 10 fire fights during SHTF? I say pretty close to zero. I would also say if during SHTF you managed to get yourself in more than 10 fire fights you are doing something VERY wrong! Thats my story and I am sticking to it.
Sad part is that #5 is carrying all of 1-4 on our backs.
Ha, ha!
I think a lot of us preppers are like you. I have more ammo, but that's probably because my range time is quarterly. I have an all wheel drive but only because of snow and ice. My vehicle would quickly bottom out in an off road situation.
As to the odors and noxious fumes.... I assume the HOA is also clamping down on anyone who dares to paint or re-stain their decks or fences. Also some yard service treatments emit odors that might be offensive to some sensitivities.
Great now with your guys help I managed to hijack my own Thread!!!! ;-)
It hardly sounds like this guy has a 'factory' It is at a hobbyist level. Heck, one can complain about bbq (smokey air and odors) just as much. HOA's get more than their share of power hungry liberal/progressives who want them to obey them no matter what. The HOA needs to stand down - this guy is doing it for a good cause - it appears the HOA is anti-military.
“Another reason to HATE Homeowners Associations. “
Then don’t join one.
BTW I happen to live near a large complex, with a woodshop among its many amenities. A friend of mine is member of a group there, that makes toys for children.
I know it is difficult to grasp, but people buy in planned communities, partly for the “order” they present.
You won’t have a neighbor up into all hours of the night, gunning the engine of his hot-rod project in his garage.
Or neighbors failing to mow and water the lawn. Or a neighbor turning his garage, into a shop.
Every person signed up for association rules when they bought.
If they don’t like the rules, they can sell and locate elsewhere.
I have no sympathies for anyone running afoul of homeowners
associations. If you don’t want to deal with them, don’t buy a house in one.
I agree. At first I almost went into default mode for stories like this, that say the Veteran is almost always in the right, but not this one. If he’s really that good, to make furniture, he should be able to rent or borrow space in a facility that is away from private residences. Not everybody wants to hear all that noise after working hours or during the weekend, regardless of the reason. Last week, there was another Vet pressing his luck. He has 14 (FOURTEEN DUCKS!) white Companion ducks, and he is being pressured to get rid of them or some. Unless he’s on a ranch, 14 ducks or geese is too much. He is pushing the courtesy too far. I’m sure I will hear from those who disagree, as is their choice.
I manage a HOA with 1900 homes. This would be called a home occupation and the complainant would be told that nothing could be done to stop someone from enjoying their home occupation. What happens when he has to paint his house? The yard furniture? The fence? Sounds like he has an angry neighbor close by to me.
His neighbors have written letters of support, so I wonder who is pushing this.
If he has that much support they should get themselves elected to the board and then amend the rules.
