Perrette's severe allergic reaction landed her in the hospital.
NCIS actress Pauley Perrette suffered a severe allergic reaction caused by her hair dye that landed her in the hospital.
The 45-year-old star, who plays forensic scientist Abby Sciuto on the hit show, warned her Twitter followers to be careful about hair dye allergies in order to avoid having their heads "swell up like a melon" or worse.
Perrette is a natural blonde but she has been dyeing her hair for the past 20 years.
"The other half of my face had become twice the size of my head," she told CBS Los Angeles.
She experienced warning signs six months ago when a rash developed on her scalp and neck, but ignored it. Perrette is considering natural hair dye or possibly wearing a wig.
Sadly there are, and much older. There are still skinheads and mohawks around even though all three fads died with the 1980s.
Gee thanks for shattering one of my few remaining illusions. ;)

This is a good time for that character to get a new “thing”. Hasn’t it gotten old?
I had a friend who had to go to the hospital from hair dye. And I think she was even using something natural because she knew was alergic to the chemical stuff.
I would ONLY have my hair dyed in a Salon, but my mom and a different friend used to do it themselves all the time.

It’s not a specific brand but the ingredients that causes the reaction. Check the label.

I agree. I actually like both the show and her character. I had been under the impression that she was in her early-mid 30s.
“Natural” makes no difference, as allergic reactions are triggered by organic compounds (especially proteins).

I’m thinking maybe it was “henna”. It was very frustrating for her. Trying to cover up the gray, you know?
I have NEVER put any chemicals on my hair. Shampoo and conditioner, that is it. My hair is still not gray, only a wee bit that the hairdressers all love. I’m 56.
I really think avoiding chemicals has been good for my hair.
I *might* dye my hair if it ever gets really gray, but maybe not.
My grandmother and her sister, who lived to be quite old, had the most amazing totally white hair. It was really beautiful. If I live long enough I could rock that look!
Ah, Veronica Lake’s hair. Another thing the government had to go a ruin.
I already had the “gothic” black hair from birth, but I started having white hairs popping up at age 30, so I started dyeing it. Been doing that for 50 years now. So far no allergy. I may stop dyeing when I stop working.
That’s not dye, exactly.
It’s a ‘cellophane’ color.
It can only add to whatever you already have.

Sometimes, auburn is just too boring and I feel like kicking it up many notches for a few weeks.

Last week I was in a local consignment shop and the usual lady was not there.
When I checked out, a 60-ish lady, decked entirely in tie-dye, with half cherry-red/half salt and pepper hair took my money.
I was okay with all that until she smiled.
She also had fangs.
I’m not entirely sure what “genre” that is.
