The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Are those egg-layers, too - or just for meat?
We're getting six Leghorns next month, just fer' eggs - but I guess when they stop laying....
Missing you today on the Garden Thread. What’s up in Ya’lls neck of the woods?
They are pretty much a meat bird only, but will lay a super-jumbo egg, if you let them; but by that time they can have severe leg problems.
There is a related breed, Slow White Cornish Cross, which mature 2 or 3 weeks later; but about the same size or just a tad smaller. They are akin to the older strains of Cornish cross of the 70s/80s, and will also lay a jumbo+ egg, without the leg problems.
OTOH, a huge egg apiece 2 days out of 3 is fine for a family situation, even if they don’t have the production of an egg breed. The Leghorns will definitely eat a lot less feed, but when it rolls around to stewing time, the Leghorn is skin & bones.
I have 3 that are in their 3rd season of laying...and basically aren’t any more. Same for the Jersey Giants: stew meat, when I get a chance.
There’s an orchestra in Germany that makes all of its instruments out of vegetables. At the end of the concert, they make soup out of the instruments and serve it to the audience!
The garden is holding it's own. Not enough rain, the peppers are doing so badly that I've started another set (not up yet). My tomatoes are big and beautiful, and green. And aren't ripening.
I had a small cantaloupe, but a field rat (from the teeth marks) got to it. New sunflowers aren't up yet.
I'm distracted with children, so I've been letting things slide.

Actually, I read it in a book called, “Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader Plunges into History.” When we lived near a Costco, my husband picked up every edition of the series. He leaves them lying about, and I read them when I have a very short period of reading time (like when I’m waiting for him to finish dressing so we can go out). There are a lot of interesting factoids in those books.
Picked the first ripe peaches today. Sure smell good. I wish we had a dozen or more trees.
Those Germans are just so damned efficient!!
My wife is a by the book, by the recipe cook. Her meals are delicious. I grill, smoke, cook chili, spaghetti, Chinese etc. by the seat of my pants. Even when people tell me I have nailed it, I continue to experiment. I need help.
Thank you. Amazing.
I’ve read that calcium takes care of the end rot on tomatoes. I don’t know if it will help this far into the season; maybe something to keep in mind for next year.
Looks yummy. I would love that on a toasted buttered English Muffin.
Good job!!! Lady Bender gave away about 90% of her canning jars from quarts down to 1/2 pints. The last thing we canned was Albacore Tuna 3 years ago.
Wowser. I love blackberry or rasberry jelly and jams.
You don’t need no stickin help. That’s the way I do it, and all my female relatives that I know personally do it.
It’s kinda like playing the piano by ear. Some people can do that with no formal training and no knowledge of how to read music.
Others make beautiful music by learning to read music and playing by the book.
It’s all good music!
I gotta check and see if daughter’s peach trees are ready, but probably it will be first week in August.
2 1/2 weeks since Lady Bender had a hip joint replacement and is making amazing progress. She can’t do any gardening yet but wants to try driving tomorrow.
