One of Microsoft's main goals with 'Threshold,' the next major version of Windows, is to win over Windows 7 hold-outs.
Windows "Threshold," the next major version of Microsoft's Windows operating system due to hit around the spring of 2015, is coming into focus.
And not too surprisingly, one of the Microsoft Operating Systems Group's main goals in designing and developing the coming operating system (OS) release — which may or may not ultimately be branded as "Windows 9" — is to try to make it more palatable to hold-out Windows 7 users.
In order to do this, Microsoft is working on including in Threshold lots of new features specifically aimed at "desktop" users, meaning those who interact primarily with their Windows computing device from a desktop or laptop PC with mouse/keyboard and optional touch.
With Windows 8.1 Update, Microsoft officials designed Windows around a set of profiles based on the hardware specifications of the devices in use. Certain devices running Windows 8.1 Update include Power and Search buttons on the Metro-style Start screen; others don't. Some of those running Windows 8.1 Update have their machines start up by default in the Desktop/Win32 legacy environment, while others on touch/mobile-first devices start up in the Metro-Style Start Menu by default.

How are Windows 7 users needing to be “won over”?
It may be Windows Vista upgraded, but my computer runs 24 hours constantly and I haven’t had any problems since I built it a couple of years ago.
Until now the UI is too “different” than the previous ones (Win 7, Veesta, and XP) with a Start button and toolbar. Thirdparty freeware can emulate this UI and get most people comfortable enough to be productive. I would expect the newer OS to be more featureful and less subject to exploits.
Sitting here with my ThinkPad R50e running Win XP. It does everything I need and then some. Tell me again why I should upgrade?
MSFT made XP, and Win 7 for that matter, too good.
If MSFT lives up to their “every other OS is a good one” history, Win 9 should be a humdinger!
Who knows? Maybe by then I’ll have updated to Win 7 where I can still run XP in a virtual machine :)
Not sure why Microsoft is worried, Linux is so much better,faster,lightweight, and does more than windows could ever dream of, not to mention the lack of Virus’s and other nasty little things.

Well, this new OS should run like a champ then. Because every other Microsoft OS alternates between sucky and super.
Linux is a few breakthroughs away from scaring MS and Apple.
All they need to do is come up with a nice XP interface to win over this Win 7 user.
I have still not gotten a check from MS for 500,000 bucks to buy new manufacturing machinery that works with Winows 8
I want Win 7 with the Win XP file manager and Power Toys.
Was not happy with win7 when I tried it and still see nothing but problems with win8/win8.1 to this day.
Still using Linux for the vast majority of things I need to do, but who knows? Perhaps win9 may show some intelligent additions this time in the newest version.

I’m on XP. I haven’t seen much evidence that my productivity would increase even going to Windows 3000 (and no, I’m not an idiot).
Just don’t see how spreadsheets, or Word, or database access, or my Cad programs improve. Or my browsers.
Know what you mean, but lots of people are running the ‘doze OS and problems are a concern for quite a few of them. Perhaps the new Win9 will address some of the problems for a change, instead of demanding another steep learning curve for yet another of their ‘Best Ever’ Operating System.

Seems like Microsoft is playing the same thing with their software as BO is playing with healthcare. If you like your Windows _, you can keep it, but.....
When my techie son installed Windows 7 on all our work desktops as replacements to XP, he said he hoped I realized it would only be a matter of time before Microsoft would quit supporting Windows 7 and then I’d have to upgrade again. I left XP on all our laptops but they are not connected to the internet. I’m totally happy now they should just go totally away.
Crikey, I'd be happy if they would just upgrade the underlying OS instead of demanding that we purchase a whole new one and re-learning yet again how to use the bloody computer every time!
