The place where it allegedly went on autopilot is ~S4E93 at 4:11 and dropped in the ocean ~S32E97 at 8:11 — that’s 1940 miles over 4 hours.
I would love to see a straight line from point to point through those arcs that allows for a fixed speed hour by hour over those 4 hours.
If I’m reading that chart correctly, the autopilot would have had to fly the first hour at 307 mph and the last hour at 700mph — and that not only bad autopiloting, but it’s also impossible.

Could be but the plot must be a projection from points on a sphere to a flat surface so that would need to be taken into consideration. Plus I don’t understand how whoever made this plot drew the straight line. As you noted, they should have used constant velocity to choose the points and then see if that curve maps to straight line.
Despite the plot, they must have done that to draw the conclusion they did. Don’t you think?

4 hours. 500 miles per hour. 2000 miles. 2000/24000 = 1/12
1/12 * 360 = 30 degrees. I don’t think a 30 degree arc on a globe would look as straight as the plot.
But maybe the are using some transformation that plots arcs as straight lines. If that is possible.

Good question that the officials will evade.
He should have been practicing putting the plane on autopilot or running out of fuel or crashes.
I saw it at an airport in Nebraska.
Too late, activating the autopilot then has no effect.
I looked at this again last night and the only way the Inmarsat arcs work with the autopilot is if the plane was put on autopilot deadheading to New Amsterdam Island shortly after turning south for about 4.5 hours —
BUT then in order to hit that final arc it would have had to come off autopilot and that heading with about an hour of fuel left. It’s at that point that it would have to turn to the east toward Perth to hit that final Inmarsat arc and the new search area.
Whether he then put it back on autopilot after making those course corrections with an hour left, who knows, but that’s what they must be calling “being on autopilot”.
Very interesting. But are you doing anything to correct for the spherical to flat surface projection. Or, alternatively, have you determined that the mapping of straight lines works on the projection you are using.
As an example of this issue just look at the projection of any non-equatorial satellite on a flat map. No straight lines to be found.
