With an opening weekend take of $28 million, Tom Cruise’s new sci-fi film “Edge of Tomorrow” — which debuted June 6 — did even worse than his last sci-fi movie, 2013’s “Oblivion.” In the last eight years, Cruise has had only one hit (2011’s “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol”). It looks like he’s nearing the end of his run as a major movie star, though we’ll see how “Mission: Impossible 5” does when it comes out next year.

They are all “suspend disbelief” movies, aren’t they? Your enjoyment depends how much the movie requires you to set aside practical realities such as the one you pointed out.
The new “24 - Live Another Day” requires you to suspend disbelief to an absurd extent, almost to the point of making the whole thing just plain silly and dopey. Yet I keep coming back for more.
John Wayne just kept getting better all the way to the end. I liked the way he played a “retired” cancer-ridden dying gunslinger in “The Shootist.” The role was just perfect for him. I can’t see Tom Cruise acting as his typecast macho self at age 60 or 70.
The roles that Eastwood has accepted also play to the dignity of aging. Seems to be more important as I get older.
The production company averages slightly less than 50% of the box office over the time a film is in release, even less in the foreign market. The rest goes to the theaters and distribution companies.
Rule of thumb for profitability for movies is to have twice the box office in the domestic market than the cost of the production of the film.
Never heard of Vince Vaughn. Can’t stand the other guys, though Crowe has been decent in a few flics.

I’m not so sure that is the case any more, because they have been putting a lot of effort into finding out how to generate optimal nets. They are nothing if not profit oriented, and not beyond “profits for me, but not for thee”, if they can get away with it.
was really hoping to see Andy as the Godfather in the fourth movie. he does Italian very well, see Untouchables and Godfather III.
Too bad FFC doesn’t want to make it happen.
I really liked Arnold’s movie of about two years ago, “The Last Stand.” But he is clearly getting too old to do action roles, and isn’t a good enough actor to do non-action roles.
I think he got a bad rap early. First, I thought his role in “Rain Man” was every bit as good as Hoffman’s. Second, while he does play something of a stereotypical character, I really liked him in “Jack Reacher.” And despite his declining draw-—which is more a function of the inability of ANY lead today to be a John Wayne/Charleton Heston-type draw-—he is a pretty consistent moneymaker.
But it's unfair to try to compare a Cruise or Clooney with a Heston or Wayne. In the 60s and 70s, they didn't bring out nearly as many movies and those they did had massive advertising which, in pure dollars was far less than today, but per picture I'm betting it was more.
A show such as "El Cid" would stay at a theater for months. Modern movies have to make their money in basically two weeks, plus foreign plus DVD. So there is a different expectation about starts.
Stallone, for example, is not viewed as an A list star in America any more, but he still does a picture or two a year . . . because the movie INSTANTLY makes its money back on European pre-sales. I'm sure Arnold's European pre-sales are impressive, too, and probably Johnny Depp.
DDL is absolutely at the top. The guy kills every role. Both Brad Cooper and Christian Bale are rapidly getting there. Bale was awesome in “Fighter,” and I didn’t even recognize him for about 10 minutes.
I am NOT a Vaughn fan, but his dramatic role in "Return to Paradise" was exceptional. Oscar quality, I thought.
I don’t follow celebrity gossip, but I don’t get the whole “Tom Cruise is gay” thing. Other than he’s “pretty”, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to gay. I mean, I’ve never especially liked him but I never got the impression he was a pervert. (Crazy, perhaps, but not perverse). His teeth were always a li’l scary for me. LOL
Them’s good numbers. I’d love for our movie to have a percentage like that.
I'm not a fan of Adam Sandler movies but that scene in "Bedtime Stories" where he's reading the safe, politically-correct version of the fairy tale just about kills me. "What is this commie sh!T?" he asks the kids, then proceeds to do his own story.
