This Family Always Knew There Was A Metal Door In Their Backyard. Well, They Finally Opened It...
Universal Free Press ^ | June 9, 2014 | Amanda Shea

A Wisconsin family who had been living in their home for over a decade, knew the whole time that there was a hidden metal door in the ground in the backyard, but somehow were never tempted to open it and see what was inside or where it led to. Until one day, after all these years, they decided to crack open the metal hatch and discover the mystery behind the door.

The Zwick family were stunned to find out that this was the entrance to a Cold War-era fallout shelter buried right there, in their backyard. A ladder led them down into a bunker, which was a treasure trove, chock full of interesting items from the past.

:) For sure, my boys would have been down there in a heartbeat.

Can’t imagine that the residents were not that curious all those years.

I want that candy, since it was made before high fructose corn syrup was dumped into every confection.

OMW! “Green Door”! I remember that song well. Still remember the first time I heard it while riding in my big brother’s car

Before BUYING the property. For all they knew, there were bodies or toxic waste stored down there.

Yep.

I don't believe they didn't check it out before buying the property. Surely no one is that dumb.

Wonder if they've been storing stuff in there all along, and now they've called the media for the publicity? Nah... no one would do that...would they?

This is a year old story, and there are more pictures on the Internet of the shelter.

The stuff was sealed in airtight and watertight containers. The pictures show significant water intrusion into the shelter, including one of the entry shaft showing rings indicating multiple flooding events where the thing was probably full of water. It’s possible that they were told it was empty and full of water, so not really caring, didn’t bother.

It would have been like moth to flame for me as well. That’s just SOP in my world.

What I would do is sell this stuff on Ebay. I imagine that stuff would score some good coin. Then take the money and buy new stuff for my very cool 60’s underground shelter.

Lucky bastards.

One of my favorite scenes from any movie ever made. All the wonderful toys...

Just what I was thinking. I would have looked in there the first time I looked at the property.

So I’m guessing this family doesn’t have any boys.

Or Tomboy girls

Agree. It’s either an admirable level of restraint, or a shameful lack of curiosity.

Still comes in a can, at my grocery store anyway, but with the label printed directly onto the metal. Used to be a paper label that you could tear off and then use the can for a shiny target for your pistol or rifle.

Must be a pretty dry climate, it would have molded and mildewed beyond recognition here over that period of time.
