Are butter, cheese and meat that bad?

4:30 PM ET and Sunday at 7:30 AM ET.

(CNN) -- "To eat, or not to eat?" For many people these days, that really is the question.

For the past four decades, we've been told to stay away from red meat, dairy and cheese -- foods high in saturated fats -- because saturated fat is bad for the heart.

But investigative reporter Nina Teicholz says that isn't the case.

"When the dietary recommendations came out in 1961 saying that saturated fat causes heart disease, that was based on total cholesterol," Teicholz said. "But our understanding of heart disease has evolved enormously."

She said the science condemning saturated fats just isn't there. In her new book, "The Big Fat Surprise," Teicholz writes that the low-fat, fruit- and vegetable-filled diet that you thought was healthy doesn't have all the benefits it claims.

America's obesity crisis Dr. Walter Willett, chairman of the department of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, cautions readers to take her findings with a grain of -- well, not salt.

Your risk for heart disease depends on HDL and LDL cholesterol: good and bad cholesterol. And scientists know, he said, that saturated fat raises unhealthy LDL levels in the blood.

Eat what you like. We’re all going to die of something.

Eat whatever you want, just don’t eat so much of it.

As I read once, when you eat and your body wants to store the excess as fat, it all becomes saturated fat. So your body can’t think that saturated fat is bad.

I wonder if the eating guidelines, trying to steer people away from the diets they ate for centuries, are part of the obesity problem. If people don’t get enough of the right kind of nutrient, then it makes sense that they would be compelled to eat more food until they get enough of it.

I heard on the radio......her main point is that we eat less meat and more carbs and instead of getting healthier, we are actually sicker....

also read from a nutritionist about fads, elimation diets, etc....she said basicall they're all a bunch of hooey.....moderation is the key....

today its gluten free this and that....they did an double blind test on several groups and found no difference at all and how they felt, glutin free or not...

I read somewhere that you can totally stop eating for weeks at a time.

Not that I would ever want to try that.

The idea that there’s ever going to be some sort of new, magic bullet diet, avoiding this but more of that, that’s going to be the perfect diet for every single person should have been discredited by now. So much faddism, so much interference from sources that have become politicized. Watch your portions. Don’t go overboard on anything. Move around more, maybe even exercise. You’ll find that it’s not so much the food but what you are or aren’t doing with it once digested.

They’re three of the seven food groups. The others are coffee, fish, salami and peanut butter.

Real butter only, no margarine.
Only good cuts of meat.
Provolone cheese sliced thin then rolled up to eat.

I thought chocolate was a food group.

It is, right along with dairy. The chocolate goes on top of the ice cream.

The vegetable part is definitely healthy.
