UNIONVILLE, MI (WNEM) -
Unionville has its own school system, flower shop, and bar - but a police department is missing in the Tuscola County community.
A thumb-area town is left without any police after the two-person department quit, leaving a glaring hole in the community.
Village resident Bob Hare said he was upset to learn that both of the town's police officers resigned last week. Village officials said the former officers turned in a resignation letter citing irreconcilable differences between them and the village council.
"I think we need some protection around here," Hare said.

In the town where I grew up we had a constable. He had a full time job at consumers energy. He had a squad car but usually cruised around town in his pickup.
His actual arrest authority only extended to holding someone till the state or county police showed up and I only saw him do that once. He also managed keeping the snow plowed and grass cut around town.
When I lived in Michigan, Tuscola County was famous for its Blue Helmet Shoots.
Small towns generally do better policing than cities do. Their police have a better chance of knowing potential problems before they get out of hand.
The sad situation of this country reflects in my first response to this news as “Good News”.
Yeah... don’t they have any local
MEN
with
GUNS
???
Ah... a “two finger steeple”....
must be serious indeed.
We’ve got rural small towns here that are unincorporating, leaving police work to the county and fire protection to volunteer fire departments. Those with water and sewer systems are handing them over to private contractors who charge residents a fee. The populations had declined to the point that residents and businesses remaining could not shoulder the tax burden.
I have mixed emotions. The decline is sad. That they’re freeing themselves of a tax burden to an extent is good. Hard to believe this is going on in a state that’s gaining population fairly rapidly. But, that’s all urban and suburban with some coastal and mountain retirees. Rural areas are not doing too well.
Much closer to the framer’s intent. Generally one civilian given a small amount of authority and backed up by other local civilians.
One of the opening scenes in the Courage New Hampshire series showed a colonial sheriff (played by Andrew Breitbart) handing down the king’s sentences on local people. This outside law angered the citizens who felt they were better equipped to deal with crimes committed by their own neighbors.
A better donut selection available!
... after the two-person department quit, leaving a glaring hole in the community...
If 2 people leave a “glaring hole” then they have a far larger problem.
Like the glaring sinkhole where the collective intellect fell.
Somehow, I suspect the writer of hyperbole...
Fascinating story on your page.
2 officers who work 12 hours per week. Still trying to figure out what the issue here really is.

One of these days I’ll get around to finishing the formatting and adding images, lol. I’m sure your eyes are spinning from the last half of it, lol.
I suspect itinerant criminals from Bad Axe, MI.
I guess Andy and Barney got tired of dealing with the town drunk.
I can’t imagine a ten block community with a four block “downtown” had much need for one officer, let alone two.
They are real... and they are spectacular!
that’s a small town - perhaps they ran out of dogs
