The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Hahaha! My youngest daughter is 36, and I couldn’t even imagine Miss Management doing manual labor. :)
Great pictures Tube! What do you do with extra emitters if your plants are spaced more than 12” apart?
I live in deep SE Texas and get 2 gardens a year where I am.
I’ve had trouble with B sprouts myself. Got a good crop last fall but other times stem but no sprouts.
Need lots of organics and nitrogen but not too much nitrogen.
Unless I get my carrots in real early (February) for a spring garden it gets too hot too fast here and carrots are whitish color and taste like a paper sack.
Fall carrots are great.
I’ve put a little over 5 quarts of green peas in the freezer so far and more are on the way.
I’ve got enough squash to feed the starving Armenians.
Corn’s around 4 feet right now. Hope we keep getting rain I have 2 gardens and don’t have a way to water my second garden where it’s planted.
Pintos and black beans are loaded. Surprised myself with that.
My red and white onions have also surprised me.
I’ve got a 5ft chicken snake and an almost 6ft king snake hanging around my main garden in back of the house. Maybe they’ll put the fear in the squirrels and keep them out of my tomatoes.
Everything has done good so far except my green onions.
After my second planting and still nothing I quit.
The structure of my soil is such that it spreads 6 inches or more. I also use 6 inch spacing on a few beds as my rows ore only 12 feet long.
Beautiful!
Ghost dogs are okay as long as they don't bring in a bunch of ghost fleas. Next time you hear ghost dog, you should take a picture and see if anything shows up...
Our rainfall was on 52% of normal this year and none in May and very little in April.
We started in earnest back in 2010 with the raised beds, and adding perennial berries trees etc. Before that we had about 200sq ft sq garden patch that we kinda planted when the mood struck.
Certain parts of our back yard are all garden with grassy paths around them. We still have plenty of lawn on the side lot and front yard. Tried to plant some nut trees in the front yard, and various flowers over the years. Nothing grows. They just die, so we just enjoy the trees that we have already there.
I suppose we may do some major over haul later if we need to add space for more gardening, but we kinda like a certain amount of natural space with all the wildflowers and stuff.
What I'd really like is an underground cistern with a manual pump as well as an electric one, and a storage building with a root cellar under it.
I do manage to have some things growing year round, by planting winter wheat, cool weather crops under a row cover, and indoors in front of the patio door.
Seems to be a theme around here. Lots of gardening plans for this weekend.LOL
That’s me too. Almost finished with the seedlings, and am going to go ahead and start planting directly in the ground. It’s that time here.
Once again our Spring has mostly been cool, wet, and wildly fluctuating. Hence the need to wait longer than usual. We should be ok from now on as far as the cold goes, but I’ll knock on wood as I say that.
Now that sounds delicious. I was thinking about digging up a few myself, mostly because I like potato skins, but I won’t eat them unless I have grown them, so I know that there’s no pesticides in them.
Well I guess you could just post a reply that says like. LOL
Thats me too. I like to just try something and see what happens.
Well Hubby considered shooting them and skinning them to be fried, but we have neighbors too close, and I didn’t want them to be disturbed with the noise.
I also think it’s just as well they don’t know we have any guns, so he decided to just haul them off to our property that is further outside of the town. Squirrel stash in case of meat shortage. LOL
I am about 75 miles southwest of downtown St. Louis. About 45 minutes from Farmington.
That’s funny. Road runner was what popped into my head. I thought that was just a latent memory of cartoons that popped up when you mentioned a running bird.
I have a wild morning glory that is climbing all over my fence next to 4 of the raised beds. I will be clearing most of it away. Wish it had picked another spot to volunteer, I don’t think that I can transplant it.
well, the family and I returned from visiting my in-laws last night...and most of the maters are still alive in the hoophouse. I don’t think they have grown a bit, though. I think more water will be required...
