FARGO, N.D., May 14 (UPI) --A North Dakota elementary school will not be allowing the young men and women in a first-grade class to perform YMCA at a talent show because a parent dubbed the planned performance "racist."
Students at Bennett Elementary School in Fargo were supposed to sing the famous Village People song during a May talent show.
The kids were supposed to come up dressed up like members of the '70s group - a policeman, a cowboy, a biker, a construction worker and a Native American.
Parent Elaine Bolman found it offensive that her daughter or her classmates would be asked to dress up like a stereotypical Native American caricature.
"I'm not in a position to do anything for these educators, and hopefully those people that are can make the right choices so all students of any culture and race won't feel singled out or like their race is being stereotyped against," Bolman told Inforum.
Maybe they could substitute GW Bush for the Indian.
Obviously these people don’t know what the song is really about.
Obviously not. Otherwise they would celebrate the diversity of it.
This is a bit confusing. How can this homosexual anthem be a bad thing? Aren’t little kids supposed to know and sing this with enthusiasm?
I was wondering, too, how appropriate YMCA is for a first grade to be performing it.
Maybe they were going to change the lyrics?
Then, again, they might want to do ‘In the Navy’.
It is always amazing that one person can get this shut down but if half the parents protest a sex-ed course, they are ignored and vilified.
The kid is not dressing up as an Indian Chief. She is dressing up as a guy dressing up as an Indian Chief. Nobody, but nobody, who watched the Villiage People thought for a minute that the guy dressed up as an Indian Chief was an actual Indian Chief.
Of course, what the song is actually about is irrelevant. If they thought about that for a minute, they would have a conflict between the need to be “anti-racist” and the need to be “non-hetero-normative”.
When sacred cows collide, you get hamburger.
Young men and women? In the first grade? Geez!!
i’d come up with a better excuse not to sit through watching kids “perform” YMCA.
Hmmmmm.
I just had a thought. (scary, I know)
What if this parent’s real objection WAS the queerness of it all? She knew that objecting to the queer nature of ‘YMCA’ would go absolutely nowhere, so she used a different angle; she played the reverse race card.
Yeah, I know. Not bloody likely. But something a smart conservative would do.
Thinking back, it’s incredible how subversive The Village People were in advancing the gay agenda....back then people were pretty naive as to what they were all about, and as a result, it was one of the first vectors that really advanced the gay agenda.
The guy in leather was a biker? I always thought he was dressed as a homosexual.
It would be hilarious if someone were to attack this mother, and the fact that the performance was cancelled, on the basis of homophobia ... claiming it was really shut down due to problems with the homosexual overtones of the group ...
The virus has even hit North Dakota.
now president mom jeans made “in the navy” the official song of the us navy.
the original chorus of “in the navy” was “in uranus” but they couldn’t get the rest of the song in the space theme...
/sarc but not really anymore
It would be brilliant.
She would know that criticizing the gayness of it would not only not help, but probably get her ostracized and placed in sensitivity classes.
But mention race... even for a slit second... boom, its gone!
