The public schools in Washington, D.C., spent $29,349 per pupil in the 2010-2011 school year, according to the latest data from National Center for Education Statistics, but in 2013 fully 83 percent of the eighth graders in these schools were not "proficient" in reading and 81 percent were not "proficient" in math.
These are the government schools in our nation's capital city -- where for decades politicians of both parties have obstreperously pushed for more federal involvement in education and more federal spending on education.
Government has manifestly failed the families who must send their children to these schools, and the children who must attend them.
Under the auspices of the National Center for Education Statistics, the federal government periodically tests elementary and high school students in various subjects, including reading and math. These National Assessment of Educational Progress tests are scored on a scale of 500, and student achievement levels are rated as "basic," "proficient" and "advanced."
In 2013, students nationwide took NAEP reading and math tests. When the NCES listed the scores of public-school eighth graders in the 50 states and the District of Columbia, D.C. came in last in both subjects.

Milton Friedman predicted back in the early 70s that increased spending on public schools would have a negative result.
They will just demand more money
The purpose isn’t education. It is indoctrination and the funneling of money to the Democrat power base.
this is what you get when you allow the teachers union to elect the mayor.
The only thing they need to know is the letter “D” so they can pull the proper lever at the polling booth.
For that amount of money you could hire a part time tutor for each student and expect better results.
To put this in a simple description...put twenty-five kids into an urban first-grade with an average teacher with no enthusiasm. Toss in lack of respect within the room, continued outbursts, and no authority figure within room or the school....then you come to the end of year one, with ten kids reading proficiently, five kids slightly less than average, and the remaining ten kids are all marginal in reading and other skills. From that day on...for eleven more years...the group will never match up or catch up with expectations.
To make up for this lose-lose game....you the administrator convince the school district to hire ‘helpers’...who really are there to occupy a pay-spot and really do no more than pull trouble-makers to the corner of the room so they can push your buttons and get you frustrated.
Then you, the administrator...convince the school district to buy laptops. More expenditure, no constructive results.
Then you, the administrator....convince the idiots to increase pay and benefits....to keep the better teachers there, but you can’t prove any of the kid’s numbers are any better....unless you invent a test that they can pass (you can guess the value of the test in real terms).
At some point, you the administrator....convince university gate-keepers to allow your marginal kids to be accepted (not the failed kids....but the ones who are really 9th-graders when they graduate). The colleges all play this game for a decade or two....but then start to admit that their system wasn’t made for this type of marginal intellectual to get a degree...especially a master’s degree or PhD).
Then finally...some of these marginal graduates end up as political figures and journalists...hyping up a problem that they know that exists...pretending that money or funding will fix it.
Did I miss anything?
Solution? Start back at the first grade...limit it to twelve kids...put retired Marines in the rooms for disciplinary issue punks...forget all other topics in the first and second grade except English and math. Drop the fed’s and state government out of each path...lay the entire blame on the local school board and the school management, and FIRE them if they can’t do the job...along with the teachers involved (revoke their certificates if they won’t regain control).
Greats scot! For that kinda money everyone family with more than one kid should have a ‘governess’ to educate them.
The children and grandchildren of LBJ...
Or:
Vouchers
Simpler and will do what you want and more
We talk a lot about paying people not to work but paying people not to teach properly and not to learn carry an equal or greater cost to society.
Education, beyond the purity of expanding one’s knowledge, has always been a survival skill.
It’s a fact that zoo animals that are fed regularly and become conditioned to a lack of predators and/or prey become listless and bored (that’s why they never move when you see them).
Take away the motivation to survive and thrive and you get...listless and bored people.
DC has a 50% black population. This may explain a lot also.
The best private schools. In my area are under $12,000 per year. Everyone of the students go on to four year college and beyond — most on scholarship.
Damn shame these union teachers and liberals are holding these kids back from being able to get an education worth a damn.
In 2010, Barack Obama called for fixing the public education system by giving us the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and Race to the Top,
which he said would fix the education system already fixed by the 2001 GW Bush and Ted Kennedy legislation called No Child Left Behind,
which was supposed to fix a system supposedly already fixed by a 1994 piece of federal legislation called Goals 2000,
which was supposed to fix a system already fixed by America 2000,
which was a 1991 response during the Bush administration to a 1983 federal report on education called A Nation at Risk,
which was published a full four years after Jimmy Carter first fixed the nations public school system by establishing a cabinet-level Department of Education in 1979.

Our schools dont NEED more money!
Our schools NEED NON-UNION Teachers and Administrators, who have the EDUCATION of our children as their first priority.
Education is NOT Indoctrination to a Leftist idology!
"Do I really have to say it?"
Yup. Just like in Austin. The schools in east Austin are spending almost twice per pupil as those in the west side. East side schools are primarily Holder's people and most have daycare facilities at the middle and high schools.
West side have very few of Holder's people and no daycare facilities. The graduation rate of the west side is probably 25 - 40% higher than the east side.
Nope, race has nothing to do with it, it is lack of money. < /sarc>
