The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
So the Ghost Peppers seeds sprouted, huh? How many? I should start some I guess, but with 2 plants covered with peppers, I just haven’t done it yet. I’m glad it worked out for you.
Johnny once had a herd of cows and chickens suffering from intense diarrhea walk across his property.
Thanks, for all the info, Silentgypsy! I’m constantly amazed at how innovative gardeners can be!
Does the autotransformer make it a variable-speed blower?
If you ever come across a tomato called brandywine, buy it. It is the best tomato ever.
No, there’s nothing like what you describe in my area. This could be very helpful if you’re able to do it.
Her patio arrangement sounds like it was very attractive and inviting. I use to be involved in flower gardening before my health issues came about. Always admired the beautiful gardens down south...today the extent of my gardening is watching P.Allen Smith on TV...his style, his personality soothes me and let’s me dream...
I’ll put it on my list..thanks for the suggestion.

There are LOTS of brandywines...take your pick. :-)
Because I suffer from TOCD (Tromboncino Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), I went out this morning, and there were two male flowers. Wow. I ran in the house, got three Q-tips, a ziplock, and ran out to gather some pollen.
Soon, I heard Mr. Buzz E Bee letting me know of his displeasure at my foray into his flowers.. So now, I know how the T squash are getting pollinated, and they don’t need my help.
Hmm, in my private practice, I never had a patient with TOCD. I think this is a new mental disorder and perhaps should be in the DSM V, the latest diagnostic book for mental health workers to use to “label” people.
Congrats on the male flowers. One of my flowers dropped off during the night so I'm left with two flowers. Don't know why that flower fell off. The stem that is left has nothing on the end of it.
An adult beverage should help lower the symptoms of TOCD. Also, I've been researching hugs and if you hug someone or other living being, such as your dog, your heart rate drops, blood pressure drops, and your hormone, oxytocin, goes up and makes you feel good. I'm writing an article on hugs to put on a survival website and I'll post it on this thread.
HUG SOMEONE TODAY and every day.
And risk MRSA, and TB, and Community Acquired Peneumonia, and who knows what else? You're suggesting a germaphobe hug people? I can pick up a cat, and rub it's tummy, but that's as far as I go down that road.
“TOCD (Tromboncino Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)... “You’re suggesting a germaphobe hug people?”
Certainly don’t do anything outside your comfort zone. I didn’t mean grab someone off the street and hug them. You have a mother and a daughter you could perhaps hug, then there’s the gun/ammo man but he is probably outside your comfort zone. :o)
Right now I have my Yorkie to hug which I do all the time. I had her at the vet for a checkup last week and she is free of any disease but I’d hug her anyway unless it was something that would pass to people.
Today is Mother’s Day so there is lots of hugging going on across the country. :o)
sockmonkey, you talked about using the toilet paper tubes or paper towel tubes (cut down to size) to plant a carrot seed in each, then when the seedling is up, plant the whole tube in soil. That sounds excellent to me now as each carrot would be separate from the next one. I'm going to try that with some now and see what happens.
Unfortunately, when I was scraping the last few seeds into the last few spots.... I sneezed. 4 of the spots got about 5000 seeds. I may be mowing it more than thinning it.

Yeah, and I had saved about three dozen to try it, but the other day, I was cleaning, and tossed them all. I won't be trying carrots until fall, but since a 25 lb bag of juicers is about 7 bucks, it's easier to buy them at Restaurant Depot.
I collected cardboard tubes all last fall and winter when I read about that technique. Then, the puppy joined the family and that’s what I wound up growing this spring lol! (The Creator is looking right now and probably cracking up. That’s OK. It’s nice to be a source of amusement.) There’s always the fall or next spring....
I started saving the tubes months ago and have them stuck somewhere in the kitchen, downstairs bathroom and my upstairs bathroom - I’ve got tubes. I’m writing an article about hugging and when I get that posted on another website, I’ll gather up tubes and start making them ready for seed starter.
As I’ve said before, those seeds look like dust. Worst seeds ever to try to plant and know what you planted - in my opinion, it can’t be done. I used a metal slider thing I have to place seeds and put a bit of dust in there and scraped it on top of the soil in the cup. At least the rule is leave it on top of the soil. Trying to actually plant it under the soil would be freak out time.
