I did it. I got an electric car. A Nissan Leaf.
Whatever the origins, the confluence of factors made it absurd not to. Buyers get a $7500 credit off federal taxes. Georgia offers $5000 off purchase or lease. Power usage costs about $25/mo (vs gas at $150-300). That, plus negotiating, makes a 2 year lease net cost $0, if not negative. That I was driving a '98 POS facing major repairs, plus legislative movements reconsidering the incentives, made it a must-do.
If you're in a state with similar incentives, and have any reason at all to get another car, do it.
Environmentalism? Reducing pollution et al is a good thing, but as I was otherwise looking at a Jeep Wrangler, not a major factor. Taxation/redistribution? Getting mine $$$ back is a good thing. If they're gonna legislate it, use it.
Just a happy new nifty car owner here, had to share. Get your free car now if you can.
good for you.
You took the words right out of my mouth. Sadly this is about the level of discourse I've seen on this site for a few years now.
The federal rebate was instituted pre-Obama (IIRC).
The state rebate was instituted outside of Obama, due to a jurisdiction which suffers a smog problem.
I’m driving a car, not an ad. You can’t drive an ad.
Yes I posted this on a conservative site - so? I’m a conservative who bought a neat car and worked the system in a way that favors conservative values (getting my own money back for what I need).
Attacking you? uh, you’re the one spewing vitriol.
Asking about your deductions is fair because you’re attacking me for taking a very legal deduction.
You may not have initiated this thread, but nobody is making you participate in it.
I’m not shilling for environmentalism (see original post), I’m shilling for getting your own confiscated money back; insofar as they may overlap, so what? would you like me to burn a tree for you? I’d be happy to.
That was my experience with my in-laws' Camry hybrid. I believe their's was also a 2012 model. It has me seriously considering one for my next purchase. I love my Avalanche, but 40+ mpg is just too awesome when compared to 16 mpg and this so-called "new normal" with high gas prices.
“The truth is he is shilling for environmentalism”
PROVE IT.
No he isn’t. If one’s life is geared for it there’s nothing wrong with buying an electric car, they cost less to fuel and maintain.
And I’m not attacking you, I’m pointing out that you’re failing to live up to your stated ideals. Every fiscal conservative should take every tax deduction available to them. Heck everybody should take every tax deduction available to them, but liberals seem to like handing money to the government so we know they won’t.
Who said anything about threat. I’m just pointing out that giving the government the least money possible is part of being a fiscal conservative.
He’s not a monster. You need to figure out a way to make your argument with no hyperbole and no ad hominems. See if it can stand up on facts and logic. If it can’t that tells you something about your position.
it's you who doesn't see that buying these “green” cars is following the environmentatlis agenda
the government buses here in this city all have sign like “driving on clean bio diesel” or some other environmentalist slogan.imo driving one of these green vehicles is agreeing with the environmentalist agenda or saying yeah you are right even if he says he is doing it for economic reasons. its an ad almost like those gov buses. what if someone posts i take welfare for economic reasons ? go ahead and try it
i see the Prius and i know most of them are liberals.
Just because two people are traveling in the same direction does not mean one is following the other.
I like high tech electronic stuff. EVs are cool for reasons completely unrelated to “environmentalism”. I want an electric car because the technology is neat and it fits my needs. If the gov’t wants to give me thousands of my own dollars back to me (remember, it’s a credit not exceeding my tax liability - to wit what they’re going to take from me) because, out of sheer freaking coincidence, doing so happens to briefly coincide with Leftist ideals, does in no way make me a Leftist.
Leftists eat food. Are you going to starve yourself because eating food is valued by Leftists?
And remember: you’re paying taxes. You’re feeding the monster. Don’t criticize me taking a sensible tax credit until you stop paying taxes period.
ARE YOU CRAZY? Trying to single-handedly destroy the whole internet? Think before you post!!!
You throw around so much hyperbole and ad hominem it’s difficult, and not worth the effort, to keep track of exactly who you’re talking about.
Part of your problem is you obsess on the “green” aspect. In the long run a “green” car gets good fuel mileage and has limited to zero emissions. That’s it. And there’s nothing wrong with either. As a survivor of the 70s and LA smog alerts I can attest that less pollution is good even after you assume global warming is a hoax, crap in the air still sucks. And better fuel efficiency leaves more money for the fun parts of life. Yeah the hippies like it when you get a “green” car, but even a broken clock is right twice a day.
There’s nothing wrong with having buses run on bio-diesel. It’s a good fuel source that’s converted waste product and therefore very cheap, and diesel engines are fuel efficient and burn cleanly. And since those are government buses it’s YOUR tax dollars fueling them, wouldn’t you prefer they get the best mileage for your buck?
I’m not into hybrids because I haven’t bought into the 2 engine model, too many moving parts, too much engine being ballast at any given time. But all electric isn’t a bad idea. If my car regularly parked near an outlet and I never went to Phoenix I’d get one. Even without government rebates for people in certain lifestyles they make solid economic sense. Just because hippies like them doesn’t mean they’re bad, it just means if you buy one used it’ll probably stink of patchouli.
If it works for you and your situation, good. But many of us have to be able to take off and drive a few hundred miles without stopping for hours to recharge.
When there is plenty of supply, they see fit to lower the barrel prices...and when they wish, they raise them too. It is so obviously a rip off that I am amazed that any conservative could actually think it is justified to put a commodity on a market place that clearly is manipulated, when oil companies could avoid that and sell directly...not as much potential for profits in that! As ai stated, if this type of wild swings in prices occurred in electricity, just as much as a need as our cars, we would see revolt kn the streets. Pure greed.
there’s nothing wrong with coal and oil. that’s why you liberals/democrats had to invent a hoax called global warming to demonize coal and oil
that’s what our civilization runs on coal and oil and has been created on
democrats want to destroy capitalism and civilization so they create the green movement, global warming hoax etc.
they also want to enslave us. you are helping them in that evil goal.
Good for you.
Now come over here and give me a ride to the grocery store. If you’re gonna use my money to buy your car, then at the very least - give me a ride.
Oh. Be sure you have the number of several tow trucks on speed dial. You’re gonna need ‘em if you drive more than 50 miles.
Nobody said there was anything wrong with coal or oil. So now you’ve advanced from hyperbole and ad hominems to straight up lies. Thus proving you know your position is crap and can’t stand up to facts and logic. So we’re done. you lost the debate, bye.
When it’s 110F on the pavement outside how well does it cool in GA in August?
This time of year there may be a good reason they’re trying to get rid of them...
Summer’s coming...
right.
I hope your fire insurance is paid up..................
Who here is demonizing oil and coal?
Oil may have a bad rap among some here because it costs more per mile than coal, and to some degree funds people who hate us.
Coal is obviously the main origin of electricity powering EVs.
Nobody is demonizing either a la Leftism and “global warming”.
Some of us object to excess crap in the air, which a remote high efficiency coal plant can do better than thousands of lower efficiency gas engines can. That we dislike smog doesn’t mean we support your hobgoblins.
