U.S. teachers are nowhere near as diverse as their students.
Almost half the students attending public schools are minorities, yet fewer than 1 in 5 of their teachers is nonwhite.
New studies from the Center for American Progress and the National Education Association are calling attention to this diversity gap at elementary and secondary schools in the United States. The groups want more to be done to help teachers more accurately mirror the students in their classrooms.

In their dress and behavior, or just in skin color?
I guess not many teachers drive their cars to school with the Big Rims, bass booming, and tats all over either. What a shame.
In a color blind society, why is there a problem with a “diversity gap”? What is wrong with minority students being taught by white teachers? Is there white math, black math, hispanic math, asian math, or even homosexual math????
is it a problem that almost 80% of NBA players are black, when blacks are only about 13% of America’s population????
I want liberals to tell us — exactly what are the criteria? Under what circumstances are we to be outraged that some ethnic/gender group or other is not fully represented in some field of endeavor, and under what circumstances do we ignore obvious misrepresentation????
half the teachers have to be conservative?
I’m having a hard time understanding why this is a problem???
The real rub here is that these fools are trying to set the precedence that they get to define what diversity is. True racists. It will be based on skin color.
The Ass. Press doing a little racial profiling. Intelligence and knowledge should not be a qualification to be a teacher. It’s all about skin tone! ***holes!
I’m thinking they’d make the kindergarten teachers pick their noses, the junior high teachers masturbate, and the high school teachers drink copious quantities of beer.
The purpose of affirmative action is to promote people with IQs of 85 to positions of responsibility for which they are completely unqualified.
Government schools are cesspools of affirmative action.
Any questions?
So basically what they want is for blacks to become teachers without having to qualify like white teachers have to.
>>Is there white math, black math, hispanic math, asian math, or even homosexual math????<<
Yes.
White: 1+1=2
Black: 1+1=EBT card worth $500
Hispanic: 1+1=Green Card Or Else
Asian: Same as White but 1/2 the time
homosexual 2%=99%
Yes. The CAP and NEA are judging by the color of skin rather than the content of character. Not that the teachers’ unions are judging by content of character too much, mind you.

<<
That strategy worked for them at the presidency level, why not propagate the idiocracy?
Oh dear God, not another liberal white guilt article from the obama ass-licking Ass Press...
Curious that these same folks are not clamoring for diversity on the basketball court. It’s definitely a business if they have a union.
Right on.
I used to teach at an all black HS in the South and this argument would frequently come up. One black assistant principal said that we should have more ‘ethnicity’ in our schools to promote a share cultural experience or some nonsense and a black teacher responded, “You know, and I know that all the black teachers are going to white schools because there’s less trouble and because they know these kids and don’t want to teach them!”
When I left the school for a mostly white school, that teacher was first to ask me to recommend her to the principal and she was quickly employed at the new school.
Back in my day, in the early ‘60s in junior high, there was one Negro teacher in my school. It was okay to call that group of people Negroes in those days. Anyway, he was my favorite teacher, and he was a very smart man, and I learned a lot from him.
He may well have suffered discrimination in his growing up years, but, my point is, he was not an affirmative action hire. Affirmative action didn’t exist back then. He was the only black teacher in a school of 98% white students.
Seems to me we should get back to hiring people based on their skills and experience, not hiring a quota filling number of this group or that group, regardless of qualifications.
Does this mean finding more male teachers to represent the fact that half the students are male?
