Posted on 04/25/2014 12:24:10 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

No. I just got a wild hair when I saw Marcella’s comment about grasshoppers. It may have been some vodka talking to me also ;)

I got the lettuce I wanted and it was on a strip. None of it came up. It was small head lettuce. The St. Anne’s is leaf but of course I’ll eat it if it grows big enough. I’ll try head lettuce again but not on a strip. :o)

Our near perfect spring weather has been replaced by cooler temps in the 50s and 40s. We did get almost a half inch of rain over the last few days.

So far we are staying clear of the really bad storms and high winds. Prayers up for all who have been impacted by the recent storms.

The tail of that storm line dips to the gulf coast in Al and MS. Daughter called said they were closing the schools at 1pm today expecting another rough evening.

I just looked at the national radar in motion and it is swirling around like a hurricane with the “eye” north of Chicago over the lake.

Here’s an update on my cucuzza. I moved six plants to under the grow lamp yesterday. One of those plants has now poked just barely out of the soil. I think I planted these that are under the grow lamp near the end of March.

The other six I planted more recently are still in the greenhouse, but I will probably move them into the house under the grow lamp, too.

BTW, the grow lamp is on for 16 hours a day.

Hmmmm .... maybe hope yet for my seeds. I don’t have a grow lamp, but moved mine to a window with a southern exposure about two weeks ago and that’s when the Trombetta popped up. I’ll give the cucuzza a little more time since that window gets right warm. I’m glad you’ve got a sprout! :-)

I just went back through posts, and I planted that first batch of cucuzza on April 8th. In fact, my seeds didn’t arrive in the mail until March 29th.

Checking under the grow lamp, there is now a second seedling that is up...Obviously, I should’ve stuck them under the grow lamp when I planted them, and not stuck them right into the greenhouse.

I will bring the second batch I planted when I thought the first batch was not going to come up into the house tomorrow, and stick them under the grow lamp.

Here's a not very good picture of my Tromboncino Squash climbing a cattle panel. Seeds courtesy of Marcella.

We have been cold all day today. I had to wear sweaters indoors and out. Didn’t want to turn the heat back on, but may have to tonight.

We are headed to 44 tonight, then slowly back up to 70 at night in the next week. Still only 23% humidity here at the Ranch.

Our neighborhood garden (closed) group on FB is off to a good start. We have 20 members since Sat. Being FB, you can post pictures and links, which the links have a link plus thumbnail. We have one gentleman that is doing some serious landscaping, plus putting in a veggie garden area, He has prior knowledge and posts some helpful info on rose diseases and pollination of various veggies.

I’m hanging loose, counting the days till payday. Having to pay income redistribution this month on the 15th really killed my fun, and grocery budget.

Wife had 2 biopsies of nodules on her thyroid today. That was a screamer. The only deadening was a spray of cold deadener on the skin, the rest HURT! Chances of being cancerous are slim, but it happens. I feel for her, she has been through one thing after another for the last 6mos, incl 5 surgeries. Her deductable for the year is paid, so she is getting everything fixed. She had no choice on any of it really, she had been putting off the cataracts and carpel tunnel surgeries for 6 or 7 years.

I hope things are pleasant now in Mo. and you can enjoy a nice springtime again, and start planting.

One other thing. here is a link to a noaa page that reports wind, hail, and tornadoes for the lower 48 states. When storm season really get kicking in a few more weeks, it will show hundreds of hail storms, with hail up to 4” in some cases. When I worked as a storm insurance adjuster, I watched this page regularly to get an idea where I might be going in a day or so.

Yesterday, the 29th, the were 11 tornadoes, 46 hail storms, 2 were serious.

I am so sorry to hear about all the issues for your wife. I had been so lucky for so long, but I knew it couldn’t last. I turned 65 and not quite a year later, it’s been one thing after another.

Good thing though is that I haven’t had to do any surgeries or tests that are really painful.

Hope she gets better soon and has some smooth sailing for a while.
