Majority of Americans doubt the Big Bang Theory
UPI ^ | 04/21/2014 | Brooks Hays

In a new national poll on America's scientific acumen, more than half of respondents said they were "not too confident" or "not at all confident" that "the universe began 13.8 billion years ago with a big bang." The poll was conducted by GfK Public Affairs & Corporate Communications.

Scientists were apparently dismayed by this news, which arrives only a few weeks after astrophysicists located the first hard evidence of cosmic inflation.

But when compared to results from other science knowledge surveys, 51 percent isn't too shameful -- or surprising.

Other polls on America's scientific beliefs have arrived at similar findings. The "Science and Engineering Indicators" survey -- which the National Science Foundation has conducted every year since the early 1980s -- has consistently found only about a third of Americans believe that "the universe began with a huge explosion."

In 2010, the NSF poll rephrased the question, asking whether the following statement was true: "According to astronomers, the universe began with a big explosion." When reworded, more Americans agreed, suggesting more respondents are aware of the science than originally suggested -- they just don't believe the science.

So the entire universe isn’t really 13.8 billion light-years across? It is only the size of a grain of sand?

At what rate is the universe expanding?

How can it be measured, both now and in the past?

A formless void?

Where did that come from? What was outside of the formless void? Did it have borders or limits?

All I know about the laws of Thermodynamics I learned from putting my hand on a hot pot-bellied stove. I have not done that since.

most people prefer to be ignorant

I don’t know if it is most people but it surely is true for many people.

Responsibility frightens some people and ignorance relieves them of the responsibility that comes with becoming informed. They cling to ignorance as an excuse to avoid reality. Indeed, they can avoid reality but they can’t avoid the consequences of avoiding reality.

Many of those same people also display a fear of freedom because of the responsibility that comes with freedom.

“In the beginning, there was Nothing. And it exploded.”
And from that Nothing came Something (i.e. the Universe) ... a hell of a trick indeed.

The Big Bang theory came about before Einstein’s death. He refuted it. They all became silent. Then he died in 1956 I think. Shortly afterword, they all started again. Was
Enstein right?

Sounds more like a God-created universe to me

Thinking people who do not accept the notion of a God know that we are here according to a plan. I accept on faith and faith alone that it is God's plan whilst they may wish to discuss whose plan at length.

God's Big Bang is as good a theory as any others are. I have no difficulty in accepting than an infinite God could create a billion year old rock in a microsecond.

I’m quite sure God is amused to hear of our plans.

I believe that God is the Creator of all, but I do not count “not visible” as the equivalent of “nothing”.

I try to be very careful not to “add to” or “take away” from God’s word. I don’t pretend to know all and I find many things in the Bible quite clear, regardless of the current “wisdom” and interpretation of the icons of our depraved popular culture. But there is still much unknown to us and many mysteries that have not been revealed to us. I have just found Hebrews 3:11 to be interesting and thought-provoking. Maybe God keeps these mysteries so that we will seek more answers to who He is and how marvelous His creation really is. I don’t have all the answers, but I like to keep searching and seeking.

The “big bang” theory is not a sufficient explanation for the origin of the universe.
It attempts to describe the first few moments in the life of the universe, and it fails miserably at that.

God's Big Bang is as good a theory as any others are.

Exactly. Its one of the things I like about Michio Kaku. He points out that theoretical science and religion have arrived at the same point and nobody can go any further. He goes so far as to say that his search for truth has led him to believe in a God.

Allow me to be the first to post it.

Our whole universe was in a hot dense state.
Then nearly 14 million years ago expansion started, wait
The earth began to cool the autotrophs began to drool
Neanderthals developed tools
We built a wall, we built the pyramids.
Math science history, unraveling the mystery
It all started with a big bang
BANG!
