To begin with, this article is neither to demean the starting prepper nor launch into my fellow bloggers and authors about their version of what being prepared for the worst case scenario might well be; even though the criticism is valid and should remind everyone of the old adage that NO ONE is totally prepared for a societal collapse.
The theory that many of the Pollyanna view of the end of modern convenience then in the end civilization is that indeed, mankind would seek his brother out and be at his best working together to rebuild and save humanity and rebuild civilization. The other view is the darker perspective, the so-called Jericho scenario on steroids where no one can or should be trusted and if one works within a community structure the enemy, in often cases the new or whats left of the existing government will either extinguish or work with other groups to seize control from any opposition to their way of thinking.

What you and I planted this year I harvested last July.

“Let them make seed pods and harvest the pods when they dry.”
OK, I’ll ask you more about that when we get closer to that time plus I have to know more about hanging them up and think I can use storage room for that. Now that I know I can grow them, think I will plant more next year. It would be a blast if I could fill a cigarette blank with my own tobacco. Then, I will know I can actually do it.
I am safe because I am going to raise pigs.
I’m thinking of goats. Meat, milk, and really good muslim bait.
It’s also a trap: Leave cheap booze near a bunch of rowdy yahoos you intend to dispatch.
What is good Muslim bait for those goat humpers?
A pretty goat is good bait. Heck in some areas of Afghanistan they have to put diapers on them to keep them from being raped.
Well, if goat humpers are going to do what goat humpers do, diapers will not protect them.
No, but a 5.56 or .308 will, hence the term bait.
Too many of that type are in government right now - starting with Obama.
The only thing holding them in check is the 2nd amendment and the fact they need more time to purge the military of patriots and replace them with Obamabots.
I believe that in a true TEOTWAWKI situation the government itself will be the largest, most seriousand most immediate threat to preppers and other survivors with an independent spirit.
Hmmmm. I did not know that.
So much for my idea of buying large (gals) and selling small (pints) :(
But, then, I'm not a bourbon drinker.
Oh yes, the old bait trick. Works every time.
or a port city...
Your idea would still work. Just open them one gallon at a time, when you need to barter for something. That’s just 8 pints and you would have a whole year to use them for barter
Whoa! Can't imagine the willpower involved in that little experiment.
While there was still a government, there was a lot of lawlessness. In the county where I grew up, the people did band together to help each other. They also had vigilante groups to stop the marauders.
The vigilantes were called The Baldknobbers, because of the clearings on top of hills where they had their meetings. It was not ideal, and there was still a lot of violence, but it wasn't anything like the walking dead either.
I do think that the government could be a big issue, if they decide to confiscate the stuff that's been stored - calling it hoarding, and maybe confiscate the gold like Roosevelt did.
I do think that things will be worse than the end of the civil war, because so many no longer share the traditional Christian values.
That was funny.
Chickens here. lots of eggs.
Your mention of drying seed reminded me to ask, since you all would know.
What about using attic space for drying? I have a large attic, well-vented, no critters...seems like such a waste of space, since the only thing up there now is Christmas decor.
