The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

That link you provided was a good one to see exactly how that was done. I have too much medium on the growth as I covered it to the top so need to remove enough to keep a bit of the green out of medium.
I like that area you are in. Rural Mo is very picturesque, especially loved the traditional looking barns. I was fortunate to work in Plattsburg for a while. That is a nice older small town with a main street full of Victorian style homes for about 3 blocks. Not even a motel there, I had to stay about 20 miles away.
I used to take small roads through the country side to Jefferson City, rather than I-55 and I-44(?)Mo50. I would take 60 from I-55 west to 17 and head north. That was pretty nice ride. Really rustic and rural, and hilly, too.
Strawberry preserves makes it all worthwhile. I grew up with strawberry preserves and that is what I would make with an abundance of strawberries. But, I can eat a ton of fresh strawberries, diced with sugar, chilled a few hours in the fridge.... Mmmm.
I'll be starting a bunch of new tobacco seeds today.
Everything that was put out in the main garden seems to be ok. It looks like blowing leaves covered them and protected them.
I'm going to be re-installing at least one of the sun-shelves for a week or two.

I’ve been looking at your post for several minutes, trying to think of something to say about losing that many tobacco. If I lost one plant of anything, I’d be in a funk. I’m too attached to those plants but I don’t care - don’t mess with my plants.
It’s 59 degrees outside. Are you colder than that?
rightly, my rain gauge, like the one you had, was on the deck floor this morning. That ticked me off - I need to know how much rain I get. This gauge is too easily turned over. You got a new one, could you tell me about that one and do you like it?
I'm not thrilled about the setback, but I've got plenty of time to recover from it.
It's just part of life's rich pageant.

I went to Wal-mart this am with my Home Depot circular in tow, and got the 1 cubic foot bags of Miracle Grow Garden Soil for 2 bucks a bag. The usual price is $4.88 a bag for that size.
It’s not as good a product as it used to be, but it’s better than my clay soil, which is getting better with mushroom compost, and Miracle Grow Garden Soil mixed in down deep. Also, I put it in the bottom of the smart pots as they are so deep, most roots wouldn’t reach, and it takes up space cheaper than if I used just black gold potting mix.
My Tromboncino Squash grew more in the night, but I’m sure it liked the greenhouse better. It was pretty cold here last night-low 50’s or high 40’s. I’m gonna put some wall of water red plastic things around them in a minute to try to make them happy again.
I think it was too cool for the Tromboncino squash to grow much last night at your place. I was surprised it was pretty cool at my place this morning.
You got a good deal on the soil.
I think I’ll get this one unless you think another is better. This one sticks in the ground so it’s not going to fall over all the time like the other one does.
I got it at lowes, it is about a foot tall or maybe more, it is only half round, measures to the 1/8” and up to 5”, mounts to vertical surface with 2 screws. I like it better than the old one like you have, which got broke.
Sorry for any incoherance or goofiness, took a muscle relaxer at 7am and just now coming aslive again, but in a fog yet. Going outside with puppies and get some air and stir around a bit.
61deg here. 1/4” rain. I went out a checked the plants; they have grown at least 2” since yesterday in the RCG. The ground level garden, GLG, is looking real good, got blooms on a mater, but I could not read the name tag from the edge of the plot. My guess is it’s an Early Girl.
I never have gotten the cattle panels, so just to be cheep, I may build wood trellis similar to the one sockmonkey linked to, only build it 8ft tall. I just don’t know yet.

If you need me to come around there and mount one with screws, I can. A raingauge is about as heavy as I can lift, well, maybe a coffee mug. LOL
I don’t have a place to mount a rain gauge that isn’t under a roof. the walls around the garden are brick so not going to mount anything into brick. I’ll get the stick in the ground kind the next time I go somewhere.
Did you check the gauge for rainfall after last night’s rain? Seeing my gauge fallen on the deck was the last straw for that one.

I read about and saw the weird critter in the cage. It certainly isn’t a dog as it has hands to pick things up.
The way things go, you might have gotten 3” of rain. I haven’t checked to see what was official at the airport.
Well, cattle panels are kinda heavy, ao the trellis is probably the way for you to go to save your body some pain. I did look at those trellises the other day in person. The hinge is just a piece of plastic about the thickness of the lids on store bought potato salad.
I want one more cattle panel, but I need to cut down some ligustrums that have turned into trees first as they will block the morning sun.
I have two panels, with rebar stakes on the outside to hold them, and about 19" between the cattle panels, and that allows room for the 10 & 15 gallon smart plants between them. Also, I want to put trellis up the back end of them so it can be tromboncino cucczza mania, and also make a nice shady spot for cats.
When I looked at cattle panels at TSC online, there was no product weight.
I can cut down 2 x 4’s into slats and uprights for trellises, making them very cheap to build. Also, I would not use hinges, I would just make wedges from wood to keep them at a certain angle. Making wooden pyramids is another option. I need to cut some mater stakes anyway, so just a little more saw work.
