Within a year, nine out of 10 Americans could be dead. And whatever causes the national apocalypsebe it North Korean malice or the whims of the sunthe downfall will ultimately be our own fault.
That's the fear of Newt Gingrich and other members of a high-profile coalition who are convinced that our fragile electrical grid could be wiped out at any moment.
Their concern? Electromagnetic pulses, the short bursts of energycaused by anything from a nuclear blast to a solar flarethat can wreak havoc on electrical systems on a massive scale. And the coalition believes it's coming soon.

Yes, the dirty bomb scenario is almost certain to shut down an entire city, and with enough of them placed correctly, could bring the federal government to its knees, at least for a while.
The problem for the terrorists, as you say, would be delivery. There are radiation detectors in every major American city now, and most certainly in Washington DC.
Well, the black death, was over the period of about eight years. About 75 million died which was about a fifth of the estimated world population. Although catastrophic it doesn’t reach the apocalyptic suddenness or proportions of the scenario contemplated here or in the tribulation of Revelation.
It’s okay to know the etymology of words - but you also better know of what it means TODAY.
And “today” it has the meaning of “a great disaster” ... In Webster’s dictionary as one of the usages.
Don’t take my word for it ... look it up yourself in Webster’s.
I have always thought that each state should place an AC-DC-AC trip/trigger at their borders on any power lines that cross state boundaries. In the event of any kind of EMP, it would significantly limit the “travel” of the pulse waive. And having worked on the networks at the western national grid, I beleive we do not have enough segmentation in place.
Most populations would be affected by that event, either directly or indirectly via trade and food and other necessities supplied from those populations directly affected. I’m not sure what we’re arguing about - the article says Gingrich sees this as an “apocalyptic” event. The “apocalypse” is what the “tribulation” is all about.
The sun knocking out the electrical grid in the USA would not cause all the other electrical grids in the world to collapse. The USA is on it’s own, there.
The thing is — “WE’RE” not talking about the tribulation of the Bible here. I think only you are and that’s not the topic of this thread, from what I can see.
Give it a rest, troll.
This is a discussion about the known effects of EMPS, something the military has had to deal with, and prepares for, and in our electronic age, we all need to prepare for, and not just for attacks, but for sun activity.
Your personal religious zealotry was noted earlier and you have repeated it enough, now how about giving it a rest so that we can discuss and learn more about EMP.
When he says an “apocalyptic event” - he’s talking about the Webster’s dictionary definition - which is “a great disaster”. And certainly, the electrical grid going down in the USA is a “great disaster” but it’s not the Tribulation of the Bible. That’s where you’re going wrong here. You’re linking the two and there’s not a link.
Look at it another way if it will help you. It was an “apocalypse” in Germany at the end of the war (a great disaster for the German people) - but it was not the Tribulation of the Bible.
And in Japan, with all that bombing and the two nuclear bombs - it was an “apocalypse” for the Japanese people (a great disaster), but it was not the Tribulation of the Bible.
I hope that clears it up for you.
The article addresses an “apocalyptic” event of catastrophic proportions. I didn’t use the word “apocalyptic” - Gingrich and the article did. “Apocalypse” and the proportions of casualties contemplated implies end-time Armageddon/tribulation stuff. Certainly a relevant topic here.
“Armageddon” is also thrown around a lot these days to mean a catastrophic event. But these terms derive from Biblical accounts and are often used to describe things that people fear will bring about the end of the world as we know it. “Apocalypse” is often used interchangeably with “Armageddon” and the end-time tribulation. You can take it to mean what you want. It certainly is not off point here.
Neither the author of the article or Newt Gingrich mentions the Bible, God, the Great Tribulation or the Book of Revelation, or other prophetic books of the Bible. Therefore of the various meanings of the word - apocalypse - “a great disaster” aptly applies (according to Webster’s dictionary).
You’re trying to “shoe horn” in the Bible, the Great Tribulation, the Book of Revelation and other prophetic books — into an article that has no intention of doing that.
If you think that the author Alex Brown does indeed refer to what you’re saying - then write to him and get that confirmation from him that this is his intention - because it’s NOWWHERE to be seen in the article.
It’s off point to the writer of this article and what his article is saying and what Newt Gingrich is saying.
AMEN Papa
And today it has the meaning of a great disaster ... In Websters dictionary as one of the usages.
More evidence as to how dumbed-down our culture has become.
Ummm ... a better example of a dumbed-down culture would be your previous reply.
The one place in the whole article ...
“Most observers stop short of forecasting the doomsday scenarios laid out by the Pry-Gingrich coalition, but they still see serious problems.”
... and that somehow shows the Bible, the Great Tribulation, God and prophetic events?
Have you ever tried pulling a rabbit out of a hat ... you might be good at it ... :-) ...
Have you ever tried seeing the forest for the trees? “Apocalyptic” COMES FROM the Bible and its usage and the overall subject matter makes its reference relevant. Think I’m done. See ya.
