While we wait to see if freshmen series like Almost Human and Tomorrow People survive for a second year, we thought it’d be a good time to take a look back at some of our favorite one-season sci-fi wonders.

We’re drawing close to the dog days of summer, and though there’s more original sci-fi fare than there used to be, it’s still essentially the doldrums for a genre fan. Luckily for all of us, that’s where streaming services like Netflix come in handy. What better way to spend the downtime than to catch up on some gems that never got a second chance?

SAAB definitely needed a couple more seasons.

I didn’t remember it as a 70s kid who watched a lot of TV. Years ago a friend of mine brought it up and lo and behold it was true. I’ve got the DVDs.

Thank heavens there is ME-TV for those classics like the ones you mention. I’d like to see Barnaby Jones on ME.

It took Netflix rentals to get me to watch Firefly. Between the dinosaur toys and Ron Glass, I watched and loved it. I loved Barney Miller, hence the Ron Glass.

What about the original Kolchak:the Night Stalker? Forget the mediocre plots. You tuned in to watch Darren McGavin do his thing...

Firefly from Josh Whedon. Serenity was movie to tie up loose ends. Watch out for the kick-butt ballerina.

Josh also did Dollhouse.

Terra Nova is pretty much like you describe. The only underlying plot that you would have to watch all episodes to get is that “corporations = bad, because they want to exploit the abundance of resources in the past”.

Otherwise it’s a fun series in my opinion with many episodes just about surviving in a dinosaur ruled world.

Caprica was terrible. That’s why it was only one season. A mess of writing, acting, and concept.

There were 36 Time Tunnel episodes made [so it was really like 2 "modern" seasons.] Netflix has two sets of disks, which have 33 of the 36. The first three episodes [un-aired pilot +2 others] are missing from set #1. So, you can see most of the series. I don't know, but you might be able to see the first few episodes on Hulu or Hulu+. I know Netflix's Outer Limits collection is very incomplete, but you can watch them all for free on Hulu. Same with the 1990's sci-fi/comedy Weird Science; there are only two DVD volumes which is just the first two seasons on Netflix but all but a dozen episodes of all five seasons of that are on Hulu.

Cleo 2525 was part of a package, you may recall, known as the Back2Back Action Hour. The other half hour was Jack Of All Trades which featured cult hero Bruce Campbell and a very hot Australian lady named Angela Dotchin as two post-Revolutionary War era spies. Bruce's character supposedly had a direct commission from President Thomas Jefferson, Dotchin was working for the Crown. They frequently teamed up to thwart French or pirate interests.

Both shows were incredibly stupid and great fun.
