Apple's design chief helped transform computing, phones and music. The company's secrecy and Ive's modesty mean he has never given an in-depth interviewuntil now.
'Hello. Thanks for Coming'
We use Jonathan Ives products to help us to eat, drink and sleep, to work, travel, relax, read, listen and watch, to shop, chat, date and have sex. Many of us spend more time with his screens than with our families. Some of us like his screens more than our families. For years, Ives natural shyness, coupled with the secrecy bordering on paranoia of his employer, Apple, has meant we have known little about the man who shapes the future, with such innovations as the iMac, the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad. But last month, he invited me to Cupertino in Silicon Valley where Apple is based, for his first in-depth interview since he became head of design almost 20 years ago.
The gods or was it the ghost of Steve Jobs? seemed against it. Jobs didnt like Apple execs doing interviews. It had not rained properly in California for months but that morning the clouds rolled off the Pacific, turning the Golden Gate Bridge black. Interstate 280 South to Silicon Valley was a river of water, instead of the usual lava streaks of stop-start SUVs. But just after 10AM, an Apple tech-head appeared in an all-white meeting room on the first floor of building 4 of the firms antiseptic headquarters with strict instructions to find an Earl Grey tea bag.

“An Apple device does not merely contain only one song at a time. To suggest that, sounds downright silly. It’s a wild exaggeration. “
Ok. How many songs and apps can you put on an iPhone 4 8gb?
“Uh, no, they are selling everyone they can make. Therere no production delays. People are receiving their MacPros. The production delays is a FUD report. There are NO production delays. Apple is delaying sending MacPros to the rest of the world because of unanticipated demand in the US.”
From the Apple site: “Ships in April”.
How the heck are people getting MacPros if they are not being shipped till April?
It doesn’t matter - the vitriol is going to flow on any Apple-related thread. Despite Jim Robinson’s repeated cease-and-desist orders, there are admins who are allowed to run roughshod, ignoring Jim’s direct instructions. Who knows why -
But it also doesn’t matter when some people just simply hate Apple. Apple could send them a $million in cash to do with as they please, and they would scream and moan how awful Apple was to mess up their taxes...
Reminds me a lot of the Ford vs. Chevy vitriol... except making even less sense than that fight.
Kind of like buying a car that you kind of like - it has a big engine, and lots of horsepower. But for some reason, you decided to swap for a nicer looking car, with nice features... but decided also to skimp and get the wimpy base model engine and then complain about how slow your new car is compared to the old one...
That made me chuckle. You're in the same paradigm, but you don't hold the media your files are stored on.
LOL
“It doesnt matter - the vitriol is going to flow on any Apple-related thread.”
Seems most of the vitriol is from the apple dudes.
It's not "free". You just pay for it in higher monthly service charges. Besides, many vastly superior Android phones are offered "free" under the same plans.
I've stated that analogy several times. When I was a teen, I was a Chevy guy. But I didn't go off the deep end against Ford guys. We kidded each other, then had our beers together (yeah, I drank more then than later). But these anti-Apple bigots are something else. Totally off the deep end. These machines are tools, just like cars are tools. You buy and use what you think will get the job done for you. I'm no longer a Chevy guy, as a matter of fact I like Fords now.
These anti-Apple guys are rabid non-thinkers - can't follow logic and spout nonsense and non-factual rumors without substantiation. I picture them as 13-year-olds sitting around in their plaid red pajamas smoking dope. That's the only scenario that explains their lack of logic, and why they have to toss crap around an Apple thread. If they don't like Apples, then they should not visit the thread.
You can do all the name calling you want. You're sadly delusional. I have logic and facts on my side, and don't need to resort to the tactics of a scoundrel. Oh, I'm sorry, did I hurt your feelings? Sad thing for you is, I own and use a lot of different manufacturers' products. Just like I own a lot of different tech stocks. I don't get caught up in hatred of any one manufacturer; that's a loser's game. If I like products, I also buy their stock. Just so happens I bought Apple stock when it was in the teens and twenties, and it has since split and grown tremendously before I took profits. I'm a happy camper. Did you invest in the products you like? Have they profited you? I thought not. Bye.
“You can do all the name calling you want. You’re sadly delusional.”
I didn’t do any name calling. I just reposted what the apple guys were posting and observed that by that we can see which side is weird.

Who’s doing the name-calling??????
“Sad thing for you is, I own and use a lot of different manufacturers’ products. “
I really fail to see how that would make me sad?
I have always been a big (very big) Apple guy, but BS is BS and Apple has plenty of it. They called it a “Reality Distortion Field” as far back as 1981. I heard it every time Jobs did a keynote and no mater how insignificant the feature, the audience would audibly swoon.
“See this, we placed a bunch on icons at the bottom of the screen.” It’s a taskbar. “We call it, THE DOCK” It’s just a taskbar. “No one has ever seen a DOCK before.” It’s a bloody taskbar! “And look, the icons bounce up and down!” Sheech.
Hoo, boy. You REALLY don't know what you are talking about, do you??? Who told you you have to buy Apple chragers? I have at least three lightning chargers sitting within twenty feet of me right now that cost less than $10. . . all by third parties, all Apple certified. USB to Apple Lightning Cables are available from multiple suppliers. I saw four at Walmart last week as well as five six Lightning chargers from companies such as Belkin. My iPad Air that I am replying to you right now is currently plugged into a wall mounted Duplex outlet/USB charger via a third party 10 foot USB to Lightning cable. The outlet has both 1 amp and a 2.2 amp USB jacks so it can provide power to both iPads and iPhones. I saw 2.1 amp Lightning Car chargers from 3rd parties for $5.99 to $19.99 at Walmart too.
A week ago, I bought a 44 ounce diet Pepsi at an AM/PM and there was a cardboard display at the checkout of both car and home lightning iPhone chargers for $7.99 each. . . in bright neon colors plus white and black! How cheap do you want them???
A classic example is our console stereo. It has an Apple iPhone docking station. It's quite handy, you can charge the phone, and play iTunes through the stereo. Except.....my wife switched to an Apple iPhone 5. The wizards of Cupertino decided to totally change the hardware format of the dock and the console stereo is now useless for her. And it cost more than the iPhone.
REALLY???? You didn't bother to buy the Apple $19.99 thirty pin to Lightning adapter for that problem? I saw a bin of third party Apple certified ones for sale in Bed, Bath, and Beyond for $6.95 two days ago. Apparently, YOU'D rather complain than use the easily found adapter. Good Grief, NorwayPineSavage.
I suggest you PROVE all of your claims in that paragraph. . . in fact, why not find the proof of your entire post in reference to Apple. . . not just your unsupported opinion.
Check to see that your iMac is set to “wake for network activity”. . . it may not be.
Uh, I have. I am far more on top of the Mac market and news than you. And the only articles talking about production delays were by "analysts" from before the MacPro was actually released. The current delays are stated to come from high demand. . . and because "it is only being made in Austin." Wow! It's really high on the importance. You find THAT only on the third page of Google results. . . in ONE article. . . about the build to order MacPros. One article. Whoop-dee-doo!
What part of catching up on orders all ready received do you fail to comprehend??? Apple received an overwhelming number of orders and are filling them as fast as they can. They can only push the assembly line so fast, and it IS running 24/7. If you order today, your order will be fill in a few weeks, in April, when the orders they received before yours have been shipped first. It's called "Back orders." It is NOT production delays. Your glass must be perpetually half empty. SHEESH!
You're making an unwarranted assumption. Actually, I do hold my media. My important files are on MY servers, backed up off site, but made available over the Internet encrypted. Four terabytes instantly accessible to me wherever I am. . . No one controls it but me. Some inconsequential files are on the cloud. So what?
“I suggest you PROVE all of your claims in that paragraph. . . in fact, why not find the proof of your entire post in reference to Apple. . . not just your unsupported opinion.”
I never implied that this was not my unsupported opinion. How ‘bout you explain the term “to stay competitive” because in my 60 years it’s always meant that companies set up shop where they don’t have to deal with unions, high wages, high taxes, and the massive regulations imposed by governmental agencies like, oh, I don’t know, the EPA.
To act like this is not what is meant when you say a company built a factory in China “to stay competitive” is a massive disconnection from reality. Steve’s gone. Shields down.
