The mysterious coywolf, a mixture of western coyote and eastern wolf
PBS ^

Posted on 03/09/2014 2:01:08 PM PDT by DBCJR

The coywolf, a mixture of western coyote and eastern wolf, is a remarkable new hybrid carnivore that is taking over territories once roamed by wolves and slipping unnoticed into our cities. Its appearance is very recent — within the last 90 years — in evolutionary terms, a blip in time. Beginning in Canada but by no means ending there, the story of how it came to be is an extraordinary tale of how quickly adaptation and evolution can occur, especially when humans interfere. Tag along as scientists study this new top predator, tracking it from the wilderness of Ontario’s Algonquin Park, through parking lots, alleys and backyards in Toronto all the way to the streets of New York City. (Video streaming restricted to U.S. and Territories.)

The Bengal cat was created by crossing domestic and small wild cats. It works slightly better in the feline world, but generally I agree with you.

Nope, not fragile....:)

Some dope on YouTube a has video praising two Borzois’ pack behavior towards his Dobe.

He was lucky they were tolerant dogs.

Hell if I’d let two of ‘em “play” with mine.

It’s wise to know limitations.

All sight hounds play like dorks.

I think some of it might be from their extreme spinal flexibility.

If you can move like you’re made of rubber bands, you probably will.

;)

ROTFL That is such an accurate description of what they look like. I think the oldest is a male and he displays the most dignity and reserve. Pretty sure the next oldest is a female and the third is only a year old IIRC. Just as big as the other two but definitely acts puppyish. Once he gets the female going the old guy can't resist for long and then all three have a riot going after each other taking turns as "it."

They've been enjoying all the snow we've had this year too. Most dogs seem to think snow is a blast but I guess a Russian wolf hound might look at it as a necessity. ;-) ha

There’s nothing quite like watching sight hounds play.

I’m at a loss with only one, now

She and the PPM play a little I but the Dobes don’t speak her body language and she’s not much on playing with them.

I think I’ll dig up my old videos and watch my bouncy pack for a bit.

:]

Where do you and your dad live?

“Years ago, before the DNR caved and let people shoot them, a pack of them backed my elderly dad down a ridge.

He went 300 yards, backwards, over treacherous, rocky ground until he got to his truck and grabbed a rifle.

As soon as they saw the gun, they _took off_.”

“We just have regular mostly scrawny western coyotes around here.”

Here in Wino country, we have basically the western coyote.

They run in packs and an older maybe injured one is often seen by them selves. Like the pack shunned them and left them on their own.

Some of the vineyard owners welcome them and let them feed off the rabbits, moles/gophers and so called wild turkey’s.

I saw one off Olde 8 near Brandywine Road about 10 years ago.

At least 55 pounds.

Wow my wife’s mother used to live right there.
Are you old enough to remember the never built “Golden Link Mall” and the Richfield Coliseum?

In the late 80’s, one of my friends adopted a year old white Borzoi/Russian wolfhound from one of those rescue facilities that places Greyhounds and other dogs bred for the track that do not make the cut. She was a very nice dog, and so elegant that when my friend walked her, people stared.

She always took the dog to the track at the high school to run with her, which made the dog happy and my friend exhausted. The dog lived to be 16...

I had a Carolina Dingo. That was one fine dog! I named him Blue because of the tint of his coat and the color of his eyes. Beautiful dog.
