The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

I have fingerling potatoes coming from Burpee I think it is and they should be here next week. I'm doing those and not sweet potatoes. If the fingerlings grow, I want to keep a few fingerlings in the pantry and see if they live through the winter. I don't know enough about them to know if that will work.

I'm assuming the potatoes from the grocery were Idaho. I'll cut them up and do as you say, and if it works, it works, which it probably won't. The fabric pot they will be in does get some shade.

I'm not training vines if they stay stationary because the sun here baked vines of veggies and rose vines on the back wall I had in 2011 (rose vines) and last year (bean vines).

In summer, my garden will kill you with heat. I think it is the high brick walls around two sides and a wood fence in the back that trap the heat. I bought enough high metal stakes to put one at each corner where veggies are and have enough large row cover to put over those stakes to create shade part of the day. It was major enlightenment to me when Johnny told me last year when plant directions say “full sun”, they don't mean Texas sun. I have a bad habit of following directions and directions don't work with Texas sun.

Remember, I didn't know Jack about gardening until I started learning last year around March/April. I managed to kill everything I planted in ground dirt due to insects and the squirrels and birds killed their share, and sun killed the ones on the back wall and I reevaluated, declared war on ground dirt and squirrels and birds, and trellis in the sun and started over using containers and potting soil mix. Can I succeed in this? I still don't know but I have information in my brain now that I didn't have when I started. I researched and listened to you and others and Johnny, and frankly, listened to the plants as they reacted to action I took. I wish the plants could talk a little better as plant talk is new to me, too. :o)

With you being a prepper, I assume that you are familiar with Lehman’s. A neighbor, an extraordinary gardener and master woodworker, brought me a bunch of WW magazines, along with some catalogs mixed in and the next one of the stack today was a Lehman’s catalog and I thought about your prepping.

“Lehman’s.”

I have two items on my bucket list - one is to go to Lehman's and the other is to go to the Arkansas Diamond Crater National Park that is about 75 miles from Texarkana, Texas.

Some time in the past I think I had Lehman's catalog, that was years ago. It is the greatest “back to olden times” store in this country. I think I bought my expensive Aladdin lamps and wicks and globes from them. I got these particular Aladdin's because they are both electric and oil lamp. It would be a pleasure to go through that store.

I have looked at their website often over the years, but this was the first hard catalog I have seen. It is very interesting reading.

Sometimes you just have to try stuff. I took a big risk and put out the lemon grass and sweet potatoes yesterday. I’m betting we won’t have another freeze.

Won't the SP slips just sit there waiting for blazing temps?

They aren’t slips. They are whole vines I got from the neighbor last fall before she sold her house. We’ll see if it works.

I hope it works. All my slips croaked because I didn't take care of them.

I got my raised container garden finished and some plantings. It is a nice comfortable height for me; I didn’t measure yet, but it is probably 30” to the bottoms of the containers. Nothing bought but 2 of the containers, well, nothing new bought, I already had the lumber, the shelving units that hold it up, and 2 containers.

I was going to photo it but had no card in the camera. Photos later.

Planted 1 Boxcar Willie tomato, 1 legends tomato, 4 banana peppers. 4 Jalapeno, 1 cayenne. Room for more, I’m going to put some ghost peppers in and I dont know what else.

Sprinkler running manually presently. I will still need to get a timer and run drip lines.

Good for you. I guess we thought the same thing - time to get out there and get gardening. Just remember, I may kidnap you and lock you in your shop to build me things like that.

I have to go pick up Yorkie from groomer, then I’ll write what I did today and maybe by then the new thread will be started. I’ve got bunches of small pots inside to transplant seedlings from under the grow lamp but if I get started on that, I will get a call to go get the puppy and I’ll have to stop.

—lock you in your shop to build me things like that.—

You have not seen this ghetto pile yet. I just got some pictures and will post on the new thread.

They are 32” to the bottoms of the containers. That’s a good height for me.

I let the sprinklers run for about 45min, that will carry them for days. This potting soil holds water, almost too good.
