The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
I let some dill go to seed in my hydroponic towers last year. Now it's growing wild all over my back yard. Makes mowing a rather fragrant experience.
Looking forward to your cumin post. Love that stuff, but haven't had any luck growing it yet.
If you don't consider squirrels bushy tailed pests, this video is NOT for you
You probably won't. Next year you'll get berries on this year's new growth.
Sounds like my driveway, about the same length plus 2 curves and uphill all the way, last 30 feet pretty steep too. In the 30 years we have been here every new person that comes here comments on it. I had an appointment at the bank otherwise I would not have tried to go, laid down a bag of salt fro the top before I did. The only good thing about an uphill driveway is you can almost always get out no matter how much snow, it’s getting back up that’s the trick. Ice is the worst. I basically slid my way over to the snow off the driveway, shoveled with my hand to get it low enough so I could get over on it and then got up. I had the foresight to have my leftover-from-knee-surgery spiked cane with me in the car when I left otherwise I would not have made it up even in the snow which was almost to my hips. Sorry to get off topic. I’ll feel better once I can start garden planning.
“You probably won’t. Next year you’ll get berries on this year’s new growth.”
These blackberry sticks are two year sticks so I should get berries.
Unfortunately, we live at the bottom of it. Studded tires get us out; have only had to use chains once in the last 10 years.
When I was coming down, I had had to take a truck with a broken radiator & no coolant to the top, because the tow truck couldn’t make it down to take it to the shop. I had strap-on ice cleats, but the ice was so hard they wouldn’t penetrate, and even broke two of the spikes off.
Snowing again today; I’m going to hunt down & roast that ##@*&***% groundhog!
Got seeds and potato sets ordered, and want to get cracking! Also a bit anxious to see if my fall planted garlic & grains survived.
Thanks so much for the squirrel launcher film. Launch them into a brick wall and that might solve my problem. :o)
Surprise, engineer came by as he had a job to go to so stopped here in case I had something he could fix. HA! Slave labor. We went to Lowes and I got four big bags of potting soil mix as he could carry the weight of a bag so those bags are now under the roof of the first deck - I’ll be putting all these first plants in their final containers now that I have that mix. So relieved to get that mix. Glory!
Southern Exposure.
RH Shumway.
Probably lots of others. I’ve had good experience with both those companies though. I got sweet potato slips from Shumway last year that did wonderfully (Bush Porto Rico). We’ll be getting those again this year.
I have had nothing but good experiences with Southern Exposure.
That’s great, Marcella!
Our neighbor to the south is at the bottom of a steep driveway. We are at the top of the valley and they are below. Hubby has gone down and plowed them out more than a few times this winter as their snowblower just doesn’t cut it. They have a parking place up top near the road where they can leave a car. Plus hubby has to travel some for work and mom has 6 little ones. What state are you in? Nothing I like better than killing a fat groundhog, but I would never eat one, Ok I guess I should never say never. Hope your garlic made it, fall is definitely the best time to plant. There is never enough garlic.....
Baby sitting grand babies. We just planted carrots in the garden. I’m on tablet now. PC is playing a movie.

Glad you are there.
SW South Dakota, just inside the Black Hills. 24 miles from Wyoming; 30 or so from Nebraska.
Great news—yay, engineer!
Starting lavender plants—you might have better luck getting one plant you like, and taking cuttings from that.
Wow, that’s got to be some hardy living.
Companies are finding it hard to find GMO free corn and sugars. This is especially true of grains such as corn, wheat, and soy. In 2012, 93% of all soybeans and 88% of all corn planted in the U.S. were from genetically engineered seeds, according to the USDA. Ben & Jerry's failed to meet their promise of GMO free ice cream in 2013. Post has labled Cheerios and Grape Nuts, but do not plan to reformulate any of its other non-organic brands, stating, "For our other cereals, the widespread use of GM seed in crops such as corn, soy, or beet sugar would make reliably moving to non-GM ingredients difficult, if not impossible."
Search out those heirloom seeds, FRiends, for your home gardens.
Solution was to get a good quality dusk mask.
Only problem with that is my winter beard gets in the way of the mask. So I shaved.
I had a serious full-face beard. It was over 3" long. I went from looking like Grizzly Adams to looking like Opie. LOL! People weren't expecting that.

I’ll be putting my final seed orders in later today. Thanks to a bit of overtime last month, I have some extra money to spend :)
It took a lot of searching but I did find sources for the tree seeds I wanted. I’ll post them later. I’m busy canning right now :)
