The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

I'll be ok on tomato plants this year, but I won't have as many to give/throw away.
I always plant extras.

How do you like your mandoline?
The cucumbers I transplanted into large pots, are in a wilted state today. They are lying down on the soil, not standing up as when I transplanted them. I hope they recover but they look bad. The tomatoes still look okay from their transplanting and the onions look okay.
UPS just delivered 20 black 2 gallon pots. I will need these very soon.
I had an email from Burpee that said plants to this area would be delayed until March 10. I called them because I didn't know what that was. It is fingerling potato slips I ordered the last of November and I had forgotten it. Greeneyes, I'm going to plant those in the plastic, to be on a deck planters, you and I both ordered from the Garden Megastore. Those are easily large enough for potatoes.
Johnny, I think we feed off each other - you got me started growing plants and now we are exchanging info. about more type plants than you have planted before, plus you are growing tobacco like crazy and I went nuts planting every plant that grows in the world, so now neither of us have enough room. I will get my containers all back there eventually when this last batch of seeds are ready, but I will have to maneuver a clear path so I won't trip over anything. If it isn't totally safe and the engineer shows up, he will start yelling about my falling. He is responsible for safety where he works, and he can read the riot act about safety until you fix it so he will shut up. Going to Lowes to pick up the potting soil mix, he gave me safety tips about driving a car all the way there, and I wasn't driving. I know one thing - I'm not driving with him in my car.

I forgot to try it yesterday and I was dealing with plants yesterday. I will try it in a hour or so.
In years past, I planted 280 tomater seeds, just to choose about 10 - 15 of the healthiest. I offered them to people, but never had any takers. This year I planted 5 of each of 7 varieties, to cull down to 2 each. 14 plants plus about 10 that we bought last weekend will make our garden for ‘14. Since you told us about BT, I have a few squash and cukes going into the garden too.
I have some peppers that will go into an elevated container garden made from shallow plastic tubs from Lowes on a lumber framework to raise them to about 24”-30”.

I think when the item gets down close to the end, a person dumps the hand thingy and tries to push that last bit through that blade and that's how the hand gets cut. I kept using the hand thing, just pushed the top of the hand thingy which pushed down the small end and it did slice it. I think a person doesn't want to waste a few seconds to readjust the small amount left, and that's when they get cut.
Should have had one of these a long time ago but maybe they weren't as safe as this one. I put the sliced veggies in gallon plastic bag and it's in the fridge. Tomorrow, I'll use one of the new stir-fry sauces I got, and have a stir-fry. I didn't use all of any of those veggies except the yellow pepper. There is only one of me and what I cut up should last at least two days.
That is simply great - just put in a tiny bit of olive oil or canola oil in the large non-stick skillet, oh, yes, I also got stir-fry pea pods (love those things), dump the veggies in there, fry a bit, put in sauce, let that season veggies a bit by stir-frying and there is good tasting food. If I had thought about it, would have gotten a few regular size carrots as there is a blade to cut them fine, julienne.
I like it.
Since Lowes only had one color of Lantana, need to check Home Depot and Walmart. When I was in Walmart about a week ago, they didn't have a lot of anything put out yet.

I know I can slice faster with a knife, and I aint as fast as a chef.
And I didn't flinch (or break down crying like a small child) ;).

If I think about it, I will start some hardwood cuttings from some of our lantanas for you. They are close to budding out. I have four that are probably 4ft tall, 10ft wife and 4ft thick. They need to be cut some, they are outgrowing the bed. Gracie got in that bed the other day and I had to rescue her from all the limbs.
I dont make any claim to being proficient with a knife like a pro. I just prefer a knife to slicing gadgets like a mandoline.
The old woman that owned this place before daddy bought it had the lantanas, daisies, iris and a couple of other flowers, and they still come back every year, in spite of my neglect.
This year, I've actually spent some time on digging up bulbs and moving things around to make the beds look nice.
So, of course, I expect everything to die. ;)

A multi-colored lantana is one of my oldest memories of plants going back to my preschool years. The four big ones that I described were started by my wife just before we moved to Texas. I believe they were started by air layering, but I am not certain. My wife added several other colors to her front yard beds along side of the sidewalk last year. One is red, the others I don’t recall. My recaller is failing faster than anything else. The big ones will need some trimming this year, maybe tomorrow. My wife cuts them back to 3” nubs, but I like to leave some size there so as not to be starting from the ground up each year. I think I will plant some of the trimmings for Marcella, and to plant elsewhere in our yard.
I had lantanas here probably that old, too. They were the pink and orange ones. I dug them up, and they now live down the street, along with the figs I dug up..
They are appreciated in their new home. I don't like figs, andas for the lantana, I didn't like pink and orange together..
Re: colors, and bees, and butterflies...Both seem to love my bok choy that I let bolt...which reminds me, I need to go cut broccoli, or it’s going to bolt, too.
