Intelligent Aliens Could Be Found by 2040

The first detection of intelligent extraterrestrial life will likely come within the next quarter-century, a prominent alien hunter predicts.

By 2040 or so, astronomers will have scanned enough star systems give themselves a great shot of discovering alien-produced electromagnetic signals, said Seth Shostak of the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute in Mountain View, Calif.

"I think we'll find E.T. within two dozen years using these sorts of experiments," Shostak said here Thursday (Feb. 6) during a talk at the 2014 NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) symposium here at Stanford University

"Instead of looking at a few thousand star systems, which is the tally so far, we will have looked at maybe a million star systems" 24 years from now, Shostak said. "A million might be the right number to find something."

The people who write “we’re on the verge of finding aliens” get big checks.

The people who write “we haven’t found anything, time to give up” get nothing.

So scientists, the bulk of which are atheists, believe that this incredible ‘accident’ called ‘life’ has occurred elsewhere in the universe? Of course, the anti-ID crowd here will jump on me with their defense of this illogical scientific conclusion in 3 ,2 ,1....

I think the real threat would be that they were looking for habitable planets with life they can eat.

Coming here for resources is a favorite scifi theme but doesn’t make sense because the universe is full of the same resources that can be found here.

When SETI went from only passive listening to active beaming of tight radio signals a bunch of people involved quit the various programs/boards. Apparently it was somewhat of an arbitrary decision that many disagreed with.

While some will jump to the conclusion that alien life is an attack on God and promotion of evolution, I would view it as the grandeur of God and creation itself.

I fully expect the atheist crowd to jump on me in 5....4.....3....2.....

“Where is everybody?”

If intelligence is out there, they're probably busy doing their own thing with no interest in us. After all, we really don't have anything that they can't find in abundance closer to home.

"depends on continued SETI funding, which is in dire straits right now,"----->"ay, there’s the rub!"

Exactly. The real story out of this article is how deeply in bed publications like Space.com are with these government space agencies. If the spending is turned off, they have nothing to report. So we get silly articles like this about how we are going to find intelligent life in space by 2040. How do they know? Do they have a crystal ball?

And if they don’t find evidence, they will fabricate some.

The government funded SETI for a time, but I don’t think it does anymore. I think a majority of the funds SETI gets is from private sources.

I confess I don’t know the history of SETI from past to present.

Let’s not be so eager to let them be aware of our presence. They could take this pretty planet for their own and stock it with delicious tribbles.

I’m sure the Caribe Indians were happy as clams when they got a load of beads from Columbus for those useless yellow rocks. (Please don’t try to correct the obviously wrong history. It was to make a point)

if they did, would the government allow it out into the public? I think some would believe, most wouldn’t and some would turn it into a cult..
