Richard Bull, a character actor who played shopkeeper Nels Oleson on the 1974-83 TV favorite Little House on the Prairie, died Monday. He was 89.
"This man will be missed," the show's star, Melissa Gilbert, Tweeted. "Goodbye Richard working with you was such a joy but nearly as joyful as being your friend."
Bull was born in Zion, Ill., on June 26, 1924, and in 1948 married actress Barbara Collentine, according to a 2009 Yahoo biographical sketch.
On the NBC show about the Ingalls family in the American West of the 1800s, actress Scottie MacGregor played Bull's wife, Harriet Oleson, and Nels was known as her "long-suffering husband."
He is survived by Collentine, whose own TV roles include those on Hotel, Newhart and St. Elsewhere as well as a stint as the character Edna Mills on Little House.

RIP
There goes another bit of my youth.
Rest in peace. I enjoyed your portrayal of the foil to familial nonsense. Well done, sir.
I loved his character but would get so frustrated when he wouldn’t stand up to that shrike Harriet! He was whupped......RIP.
MAN I feel old
LOL!
Rip Nell Olson
Nope. This is Richard Moll. Not Bull. But he played Bull on Night Court
There was one episode he did stand up to his wife
Remember the episode later on the series run on Little House Harriet Olson got tick off that African American dude was going join the church that was play Moses Gunn he totally told off his wife
Remember the one episode where he had to go out of town on business. He stayed at a home that had rooms for rent. The widow was kind, attractive and didn’t boss him around. The show sort of showed he was smitten by the attention but returned home to his shrew of a wife.
That is so sad.
My wife and I were just watching Little House on Sunday and wondering who was still living from the show. I was actually happy to hear that Mr. Oleson was still going. His character was my favorite. I learned a lot about charity, humility, and kindness based on him.
Sorry to say boys today dont have TV examples like that to learn from.
That’s what I thought of first!
Good for him. At 89 he had it coming.
Rest in Peace with God...
Got me on that one, too.
Nels put his foot down a few times. The wife was too far gone to be saved but the kids turned out OK in the end.
A talented gentleman, and from IL oddly.
Nels knew it was easier to keep his mouth shut and uphold his own moral principles than to try to correct the foolish Harriet.
Uh, me?
Yes, yes I did.
What I remember about him is the type of candy he sold. The old fashioned hard candy. I’ve tasted that type of candy quite a few times since then, and every time I do I think, how in the world did a kid actually think this was something special.
It usually stayed in my mouth for about 5 seconds, and to the trash it would go.
Taffy I get, but that stuff didn’t even taste “sweet”.
Melissa Gilbert once said that she hated little house because it was to unrealistic.
At least the show achieved the purpose of defining behavior upward instead of defining deviancy downward as everything does today.
And where did Melissa Gilbert make that statement. On Howard Sterns of course.
