Free Republic | Jan 24, 2014 | greeneyes

Posted on 01/24/2014 12:24:31 PM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Yep. It's a tropical cactus and it doesn't do well in the cold. Watch out in the warmer weather though. I had to cut a large amount that attached to the outer house wall and grew through the fencing. I haven't been lucky enough to have any bear fruit yet.

If you grow them in a pot, you can easily cut them back and bring them in for the winter.

Yep. I’ll be hunkering down. I really dislike cold weather.

I’ll take four of those after I fight through the snow and ice to get there. I get updates on the forecast from a Houston TV channel all day. The latest one says chance of ice pellets and snow after midnight.

Ouch. I can feel your pain (metaphorically speaking). I broke ribs twice when I was on active duty. It’s no fun. Be careful.

The finished product is better. Bambi tastes great.

The only thing not hand crafted or killed is the cheese.

Darn, you ate the rolls I wanted. I have one more White Castle slider in the freezer, and their rolls are square and am positive yours are great and theirs are not.

Did you buy your dragonfruit as a plant or grow it from seed?

32 at 6am, 60 at my seedling babies. It just never got cold last night. Was 34 at 5am. All the wet stuff passed by north of us, and I guess it went by south of you.

You burger pictures look really good. You got those buns just right, not hard or crusty.

It's 24F here with an 8mph north wind. I'm not going outside for love nor money.

Still dry as a bone, and I'm going into planting this weekend without rain water to use on my seedlings. I may go get some lake water to use until it rains.

We haven't had a single drop of rain in January.

At 7:39 am, it’s 25F with light snow here. Earlier, it was a light sleet, rain mix. I am freezing.

I'd take sleet at this point for the moisture. It's 26F with a windchill of 14F. That north wind hurts. I had to put trash to the curb this morning, and I'm not sure some bits didn't freeze when I was out there.

It's my trash pick up today, too, but I was wearing two pairs of pajamas, gloves, and a knit cap when I went out. BTW, this is Pants Weather..

The light snow has stopped. It's sleeting again..not much, just enough to make my back deck treacherous.Didn't check the temp in the greenhouse, as I will avoid walking/sliding across the deck until it thaws outside.

We are getting some very light “wintry mix” now, but you almost can’t tell it.

I bet my poor garbage men could tell it. This is a day I'm glad to not have an outdoor job.

My daughter just texted me from Central AR. It’s snowing there..You just seem to be in a no snow/ no precip zone.

Our yard guys came yesterday. They said they may not work today. They dont take time off for anything hardly; They worked half day on Thanksgiving day.

I could take it working out in it in my younger days, but not in the last two decades at least.

At 9:45 am, it is 32.7 outside. There is a white layer of ice over everything, car windshield, too. I hear a car outside warming up, going to go look now and see if it slides when he moves.

He just got ice off his windshield - his car is parked directly behind me across the street in here. Okay, he backed out in slow motion and has kept up slow motion as he heads to our gate. He works for UPS so I expect he was going to work as I know his mom and she wouldn’t let him go out in this just for fun.

I’ve said before most of these townhouses are owned by older people and there is a car or two in front of nearly all the townhouses - people in here aren’t going anywhere.
