As home networks have increased in popularity, so has the wireless router. The rise of Wi-Fi has also caused the downfall of wired networks (in homes, at least), and many consumers now see Ethernet cords as being rather old-fashioned that is, if they see them at all. Some newer computer models, like Apples MacBook Air, dont even have ports for Ethernet connections anymore.
The blistering connection speeds offered by todays Wi-Fi standards do make wired networks appear a bit of a relic, but appearances can sometimes be deceiving. Though Wi-Fi has improved significantly over the last five years, it is not perfect. So is there still a place for Ethernet in the home?

yeap. I have a friend who was using the system from one of the “security” companies. Ridiculous monthly charges and when she had problems, nearly impossible to fix and get out of the contract. The Iris system that Lowes is offering is free to cheap. And if I want out, I am out.
I believe that wireless is now very good, but wired hasn’t stood still either. Gigabit Ethernet chips are amazingly inexpensive. There is a place for both.
I have a mix of wired and wireless; I has big problems with wireless until I swapped out my wireless “cheapo” router with an Asus and cranked the power to the max (there is a setting for this). It stopped problems dead cold. I regularly stream video wirelessly, and every problem that I’ve had was traced back to the providers themselves.
What I don’t like about wireless is that I am very suspicious of the “standards” on security. The earlier ones have been cracked (and a surprising number of people still use these). I’m sure that they all have been cracked; it’s just a matter of time until that capability is openly available.
People keep saying that, but it probably isn't true. Remember how they tried for years to prevent the export of the more advanced encryption types? Because they couldn't break it. They gave it up, I'm sure, not because they could finally break anything but because the whole exercise proved to be a waste of time. That horse left the barn already. Decent encryption keeps them out too except they have the advantage of just breaking in and physically tapping in behind the firewall. So wired or wireless won't make much difference.
Depends on what you want to do and the speed.
My desktop is ethernet and connected to the router. I’m on the work station wireless and it’s just as fast.
All the players are looking to capture their customers so they can bill them monthly.
Cox cable will provide you with a hard wired system.
The wireless, to the internet part, seems to be a domain of AT&T.
Somebody is going to break the “Monthly pay” model before too long with an open architecture. I pay an extra $5 per month to Cox Cable, so I can have two PC’s with addressable Ip’s. They don’t seem to have much control over my Netflix box. I don’t know ?
IMHO, there is an effort by the ISP’s to capture that monthly fee by either restricting access and/or keeping their customers in the dark.
Wired is faster and more reliable than Wi-Fi. Plug it in an forget about it. No configuration needed either. No, wired isn’t dead. Just like the PC isn’t dead.
WiFi doesn’t cut it fr MMO gaming either.
We have a boat in the Ventura Harbor. Couple of years ago my neighbor had a little too much to drink and gave me their password. Have used it ever since. I just make sure I don’t do any streaming while they are home and awake. Don’t want to slow em down and peeve em off. Lol
I have both but I love my wired network. It is faster.
I don’t mind. I am going to pay for it anyway, and as I showed above, we have a lot of devices and are not struggling at all from our perspective.
>>I actually like my neighbors, moderately. <<
How you can say this yet trust your neighbors and everyone who may have access to their PC’s with your family’s financial information in beyond my belief. Please immediately change your password by adding one letter or numeral to the end of it. Very simple to do and your family will appreciate it too.
I wouldn’t say killed, I’d say simplified. Anything in my home that is within convenient wire of the router (which itself is within convenient wire of the cable jack that matters) goes by wire, anything else wifi. Wired is still smoother with fewer potential issues, but dragging wires all over the place is a pain. It has definitely made wiring your whole house a thing of the past, but there’s a good chance one room will still be mostly wired.
That’s what they said when I told them I was using it. After that he even offered to tee off a cable and run it to my boat so that we could have cable tv. I laughed and said no, as long as I have net I am good. Lol
I am running wired everywhere I can, reserving the wireless bandwidth for truly portable devices (laptop, phones, etc.) and those things I can’t conveniently run wires to.
“Just turn on WPA2 with a strong pass phrase.”
The NSA has already proven that those ‘passwords’ can be hacked. Is the NSA going to come after me? No, of course not because I am not a security threat to this nation.....however, I am more concerned about the total ignorance of the Constitution by this administration so that it is better to be safe than sorry.
Also, wired is still faster than wireless.
“Why would you not just secure your wireless network?”
Because passwords can be hacked. Besides, wired is still a lot faster than wireless.
I don’t like people in general. These are some of the most amazing people I have ever met. You are too untrustworthy.
Yeah, I “know” the password to one of my neighbors wireless networks. She shares it with everyone. But, no need to hop on to hers. It is a great neighborhood, unbelievable people. A funny story, we have one neighbor who cleans the snow for everyone, has his snowblower out. So over the New Years weekend, one of the other neighbors had a snowblower he wanted to use, so he got out at 7 am to clean snow to beat the other neighbor. Guys and their toys.
My boat neighbors are kind of like that. We all look out for each other. My neighbors at our house? We wave at each other as we pull in and out of the driveway.
There’s a nice family who have lived up the street from me for 16 years. Last year one of their sons broke into the neighbors house across the street. Would I have suspected him to do this? No, of course not but he did it. Because of him more people in the neighborhood are now locking their vehicles at night.
