NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - A Pasco County woman was arrested and charged with child neglect for leaving her two young children in the car to go hog hunting Thursday.

Deputies said Kayla Marie Shavers, 31, left her 9-year-old and 8-month-old children alone in the car in 38 degree weather while she went into the woods to hunt hogs. The 9-year-old called 911 because he was cold and said, "A police car would be warmer."
When deputies arrived, they found the children in the car and waited for Shavers to return. Shavers claimed she was close enough to the car to respond if the children needed her, but deputies said it took her over 40 minutes to return to the car.

Why would she shoot her own species?
Well, you wouldn’t expect her to take them out hog hunting now would you? That would be dangerous and irresponsible.
Well, somebody gots to do somethin bout them hawgs. I recon it aint her tho.She shudda got a hawg man out thar to do the job. Aint no job fer womens folk.
Wait for court date to know the whole story. Stupid, but she left her phone for good reason and if they’re tearing up her yard, maybe they’re going to tear up her children. Parents forget that time flies when you’re using computer, on the phone, or intent on solving a real problem, so we need to not do these things unless we have a spouse home - have a spouse. It’s hard to stop that urge to just quickly take care of some business “real quick”, and kids die (like in the tub).
This was probably not a good example of good parenting, but I’d like to hear the whole story before I judge.
When I was a kid, my parents often left us kids in the car when they went into the store and it was not just a quick dash in to get milk. My best guess is that it was more than 30 minutes but less than an hour. I don’t recommend that nowadays, but it was nothing unusual when I was a kid.
According to the article, the hogs were tearing up her property. Were they a danger to her kids? If so, one could argue that she was protecting them. Was the 8-year-old reliable and responsible? Was the car in a protected place? Did the kids have blankets?
These days the kids have been trained by the schools to tattle on their parents any time they disagree with the way the parents treat them or the way they handle any situation. I will bet that any one of us could come up with several examples from our childhood that today could be prosecuted as “neglect” or “abuse.” I’m not defending genuine neglect or abuse. Beating your kids or leaving them while you go out clubbing is abominable parenting. But let’s save the legal charges for genuine neglect and abuse.
That’s what I was thinking...... Hog hunt = family reunion.
Florida has a huge wild hog population...and hogs are attacking humans. I will wait for further hearings before judging
When I was a boy about 6 or 7, I’d leave the house in the morning sometimes and go off exploring, etc. all day. My parents never thought anything of it. Sometimes I’d get hungry and come home for lunch, other times not.
I’m just a little skeptical of the hog hunting explanation. Depending on the area, I can envision lots of other scenarios. Visit to a secluded meth lab/buy shack, picking up drugs, meeting a boyfriend, etc. Hunting a hog? did she have a gun anywhere in this story?

I will hold my judgement but the boy being 9 years old and not being able to start a car!! When I was 7 or maybe even younger I was driving vehicles in pastures, pulling trailers and such.
The boy needs some male influence in his life. He will be getting it now but not the kind he probably wished for. Hopefully all will work out.
And I can undertand the mothers plight with the dang hogs. We have them in Drought (South) Texas and even a gravel road is not immune to their destruction.

Were the number of child abuse charges to drop, think of all the government trough-feeders whose snouts would be injured when the trough lid was slammed shut!
I understand what you’re saying...but 8 months old..and it was cold...can’t justify that no how.
That “child” should be delivered to the “Child Protective Services” permanently! He made his choice and will most certainly now be better ‘serviced’ than by his mother.
Only bureaucrats and their surrogates know how to properly ‘service’ children.

Her heart was in the right place but she had no common sense?
38 degrees outside, and her hair is neatly combed in the booking photo. I would want to see what she was wearing. I would think she was meeting up with a hunter in the woods. She wasn’t too close, because the police were there for 45 minutes before she returned. She was up to no good.
