as massive operation to lift stricken cruise liner begins
Refloating the Concordia will be the next phase in the largest maritime salvage in history.
Rusting away in the Mediterranean Sea, this is what remains of stricken cruise liner the Costa Concordia.
Two years on from the tragedy that claimed the lives of 32 people, the creaking hulk is still stranded off the island of Giglio where it struck rocks and sank.
Mattresses can still be seen inside the liner and the ship's furniture is visible through shattered windows still in place.
Today, officials confirmed the massive 'parbuckling' operation to try and lift it outside Giglio harbour will begin in June.
Thirty massive tanks filled with air will lift the hulk of the Costa Concordia off the seabed so it can be towed away. The 114,500-tonne vessel hit rocks on January 13 [2012].
What happens then is yet to be decided. Last week it was revealed a British port is in the running to dismantle the ship, a mega-contract expected to be worth hundreds of millions of pounds.

Carnival Lines: India will do it for free, heck, they’ll pay you!
That oughta buff right out.

Capt. Francesco Schettino is currently on trial for alleged manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning the ship before all the passengers had been evacuated. He says he is innocent and that he saved lives with the ship's final maneuvers.
Should read "abandoning the ship before almost all of the passengers!" He was absent every time the "Birkenhead Drill" was mentioned! A coward dies a thousand deaths ...
Don’t be too hard on the captain, after all he was busy plugging a hole when it happened.
Not the ‘#@$%! Daily Mail again! /s
It estimated value of the contract is more than Euro 300million.
Captain Schettino, is currently standing trial in the Tuscan town of Grosseto charged with multiple manslaughter and abandoning ship.
Does that work with cars, too?
"Your Honor, I'm innocent of speeding and killing 4 children in the cross-walk, because I swerved at the last-minute to try to avoid them!"
The captain was speeding through the narrow passage too close to shore because he was trying to impress a woman earlier that night.

Sea water does that to steel.
Bwahahahahaha! I was thinking along those lines myself :)
Seriously, that was just too weird, yesterday!
I’m fixing a hole where the rain gets in, to stop my mind from wondering when it will come.,,,I think “Captain Crunch” is still on house arrest, for his own prctection!
This was a colossal f*ck up..
We saw a TV show about the company that pulled the ship upright, off the rock on which it had settled. It was a fascinating operation, getting it ready to be towed away.
