KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. After a 30-year military career in which he earned three graduate degrees, rose to the rank of colonel, and served as an aide to Pentagon brass, Robert Freniere can guess what people might say when they learn he's unemployed and lives out of his van:
Why doesn't this guy get a job as a janitor?
Freniere answers his own question: "Well, I've tried that."
Freniere, 59, says that his plea for help, to a janitor he once praised when the man was mopping the floors of his Washington office, went unfulfilled. So have dozens of job applications, he says, the ones he has filled out six hours a day, day after day, on public library computers.
So Freniere, a man who braved multiple combat zones and was hailed as "a leading light" by an admiral, is now fighting a new battle: homelessness.

Any person living alone, refusing a roommate, can still find an apartment or trailer and make it on less than a $1000.00 a month, easily.
This story doesn’t add up.
They have illegal immigrants who work cheaper.
We might be getting 30 million more too. We’re going to need a lot of vans.
his ex is getting part of his pension apparently
LOL; that number’s about right, too.
It sounds like he’s got some “other problems” we’re not hearing about in that article.
Been there, done that.
All of my experience is in the nursing field. I can’t take away from my resume without making it look like I have no experience at all. Somedays I kick myself for putting all my energy into one career right out of high school.
Yeah I hear ya. I’ve been in a similar boat. I’ve left whole jobs off my resume, greatly downplayed & down graded my duties at former jobs and not mentioned my college degree at times just to get a chance at an interview for some crappy job I really needed to get at the time.

Thanks!
Thanks carriage_hill for the heads up
we paid for two kids in college...we paid for two weddings...we didn't get guarenteed pensions and medical care and housing allowances and signing bonuses....what did this guy do with his 30 years of a solid paycheck?....fancy cars?...vacations?...girlfriends....
not buying the pity party...
we're not talking some mentally challenged alcoholic with 2 yrs of service...we're talking a long time officer.....
military or not, everyone is supposed to save for retirement aren't they?.....
I don’t know what other problems he’s got; the article left out a LOT of needed information - medical, financial, legal etc - for readers to figure out why the Col’s in the predicament he’s in. He sure doesn’t need any pity party; my suspicion is that he needs some psychiatric help and financial counseling, at this point. The VA should be providing that for him and his family.
