The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Maybe this year there aren’t many parties

Judging by the kabooms I hear outside, my small Texas Town has many celebrating...either that or Chechen Rebels have invaded.

“either that or Chechen Rebels have invaded”

It’s quiet here but it’s only 9:15 and I expect to hear noise at midnight. I will hear fireworks but they are banned in town but that never seems to matter. We have tiled roofs on our townhouses so at least our roofs won’t burn.

4 years I've had the rocking chair. It's always here to my right, but the catz choose the office chair to my left.

Today, out of the blue, one of the catz decides the rocking chair isn't the devil's chariot, and claimed it for her own. She's figured out the rocking part isn't going to kill her.

That's the kind of excitement I get on New Year's Eve.

That, and I run out of Kool-aid at midnight. ;)

Being a crazy cat lady, I let my cats, and also my next door neighbor's cats come in to escape the kabooms..I hear a possum outside..He's not coming in!

How is your pet squirrel doing? :)

HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone. I have been busy with company this past week, and preparing for New Year's Eve Dinner and a movie at home with the family.

Just a couple of simple fix it and forget crock-pot main dishes and pizza. Everyone has gone home, and I am not expecting any company till next week, so I'll be trying to catch up with everyone then.

Marcella, I am now going to have a little bit more wine to celebrate your “found” seeds.LOL

Happy New Year back to ya. I wanted to celebrate Marcella’s find also, but was too tired after working in the garage and went to bed at 8:30, which seemed late after going to bed at 7:15-7:30 for several weeks while being sick. Okay, I’ll be honest, I’m just gettin old and can’t stay up much longer!

You ask why celebrate such a small thing?

> You're not celebrating just one small thing. You're celebrating multiple things. For one thing, you're physically capable of planting. You have somewhere to plant. You're allowed to have Prissy. You can afford to have libations around the house, and nobody's gonna decapitate you for drinking them. You have your eyesight. You have your mind.

When I get out of bed and nothing hurts, yahoo! What a great day!

I’ve noticed a lot of people saying good things about Cherokee Purple. It’s on my list.

Terrible problem:

I was away from my computer while I was planting seeds and came back to computer to rest a bit before I planted more and my computer had gone into sleep mode. When I clicked to get it to come back, I saw, “a device has” and that's all I saw because computer turned off and won't come back on.

I called computer guy but this is Jan. 1, a holiday and he isn't there. Left a message to call me as soon as possible. Then, I got out Bill's old Dell computer and turned it on. It is so old it won't accept my Wifi so it has to be hooked directly up to my internet gadget. I got it hooked and plugged in the cord in that area using an extension cord and I have to sit over here where it is hooked to internet as that cord only goes about ten feet from where it is plugged in.

I did manage to get on the net and here I am sitting in a chair that is not good for my lower back. I think I'm going to have to push my recliner over here because I won't be able to walk tomorrow if I stay in this chair.

Johnny, don't tell me it cam be hooked to my wifi as it was the computer man that said it would not connect as it was too old a model.

I almost gave this old computer to the engineer but thouht there might be something political Bill has on this computer that I would need to get to. All his chairman business in on here.

At least I'm on the net on FR. Every keyboard has a separate touch so it will take a couple of hours before I have that mastered. In fact, I'm better since I started writing this. I took typing in high school and went to college to be a business teacher and lived on a keyboard every day and worked in a business using my typewriter so it's part of my body.

I'm so old, I started on a manual typewriter and by my high school year, electric ones started coming out. Had an electric one in college. I typed very fast but the man instructor in college liked to tease me and threatened to cut off my fingernails. I broke two fingernails and my typing speed went down until they grew out - he said he wouldn't mention my fingernails again.

I was such a good typist in high school, two teachers paid me to type their master's thesis. I learned from that how to do footnotes exactly right and how to spell words I had never heard of before.

Right now, the “g” on this computer is lazy about printing and I have to hit it with some force for it to print.

Going to move my chair and I hope my computer hasn't totally died. I got it in 2011 so it's fairly new. One of my monthly checks has come in so at least I'll have some money to pay for the repair -

What do you think, Johnny, about my seeing, “A device..” and it quit? There was a full sentence there but it quit before I could read the rest. To me, that doesn't sound like the whole computer died.

I don't use Windows, so I'm not up on all the error codes. When you say it doesn't turn on, does it do anything when you turn the switch on? Make noise? Lights flash?

Electricity is getting to the machine, those lights are on but the computer won’t come on.

This computer guy is really nice. When my other one died, I had another guy and he was great. He has retired and in another year, a cup with coffee fell off my table by my chair and computer went off. I knew coffee had gotten on it but was surprised at the amount of coffee when I saw it with the keyboard off. That is when I found out my other guy had retired. I picked one out of the phone book that was not far from my house. He was wonderful, charged me $35 which is what a new keyboard cost and charged me nothing for labor. He gave me a laptop to use until the new keyboard came in. He is who I called today.

“For one thing, you're physically capable of planting. You have somewhere to plant. You're allowed to have Prissy. You can afford to have libations around the house, and nobody’s gonna decapitate you for drinking them. You have your eyesight. You have your mind.”

“You have somewhere to plant.” I bought this townhouse because I couldn't keep up the yard of a separate house and all the outside repairs that naturally have to be done.

I wasn't into planting so the size of my back garden didn't matter. Now, it matters. I would like to have the back yard of a regular house now. I'd still have a container garden but it could be much larger than I can have here. Maybe it was a “God” thing that at least put me in the largest garden in this townhome complex and gave me high brick walls so no one can see what I have growing.

I certainly have to be thankful that at 80 I move well and can handle the outside space I have.

After cataract surgery last year, I have 20/20 distant vision and 20/20 using reading glasses for reading. A lady who lives down from me went to my eye doctor because one of her eyes stopped seeing clearly. I was very surprised this happened due to her having chicken pox when young. That virus got in that eye after all these years and she won't ever see totally clearly again in that eye.

I went to see her and husband later and she told me what had happened to her the night before. After she told me, I told her I had been an EMT and she needed to go to her heart doctor the next day. She said she had been to him the week before but I told she had to go back. Sure enough, tests showed she had a small heart attack that night so the doc changed her heart medicine right then. I don't tell people I was an EMT because I don't want a string of people in here showing up at my door with their ailments. I did have to tell her or I wouldn't have felt right ignoring what she told me. She listened and believed me because I had that training.

“You have your mind.” Yes, I do and don't tell my mind how old I am. People don't know I am that old and people normally think an 80 yr. old doesn't have a working brain anymore.

My first thought is you have picked up a bug, I know you surf a lot.

Sounds like you have a good computer guy, something I have not found.
