be very careful and considerate of this person, find out his/her level of competence and act accordingly, you don’t want to give a 7 year old’s gift. Clothing, is always appropriate and if you KNOW their intellectual level, games, puzzles, etc. are always welcome....a gift card so he/she can take their familly out to a restaurant is cool too.

my friends son often has difficulty keeping track of belongings when he visits or goes to appointments. someone gave him a sports bag and he uses it for shoes, his basketball (he is ALWAYS prepared to play) and any other items he wants to keep him

Soft blanket or ultra-soft socks.
Perfect gifts for people you don't know!
Don't over think it....

How about a pre-paid Visa? I guess my point is that you aren’t sure what she needs/wants/likes so she can pick something out for herself. I am hoping that a family member will take her to a mall or help her purchase something online?

I volunteer at Jill's House, a ministry that provides overnight care for children and teens with special needs. I've noticed that the older Down Syndrome teens love those portable DVD players and love DVD’s geared for pre-schoolers. You might check to see if she has one. They run about $100 and if she has one — I'd suggest some DVD’s. I remember one of the guests there especially loved Teletubbies.

Male or female? If a female, all women love pretties. Get her a pretty shirt or sweater. If a male, a warm stocking cap or pro team sweatshirt.

Had a sister with Downs. She loved music, and was told that many do. Try a MP3 player, they are not that expensive. Load it with Christmas music and include some earbuds. God bless you for caring.

If you're looking for something to do on a computer this its it. There is a really good computer game that teaches math and logic concepts without the player realizing it is a learning experience. It's good for young and old.P>
It's called A Logical Journey of the Zoombinis. My grown up daughter tells me the original Broderbund version that ran on older Windows systems was better than the newer Learning Company version.

My sister (age 47) who has DS, cerebral palsy and autism loves movie musicals. She has a portable DVD player and her favorites are The Sound of Music, The Music Man and My Fair Lady. Her attention span is incredible, she never gets bored with them. (I've synced them all to a 360GB video iPod, but that was very pricey!)
But truly, a loving welcome to your home is the best gift of all. DS folks love hugs!
